  • I heard recently that these grants available will be going down in value from next year.

    Hi,

My mother lives in an old farmhouse with no working central heating for many years (she has used a fire/ electric storage heaters, the oil boiler seems to be clogged up and unserviceable, the radiators may need flushing and possibly replacing). The house is freezing (literally at times). It is not on mains gas. She is a pensioner.

What I believe she needs is an oil/ electric boiler and possible radiator replacement to provide hot water/ heating

I can only find grants for gas boilers.

Please could someone advise on anything suitable + grants?

    Many thanks

Hi Lechat, what about a biomass boiler supported by the Renewable Heat Incentive? The subsidy is paid out over a period of 7 years and would likely exceed the cost of installation. You should obviously ensure that the walls and loft are suitably insulated first whatever you do.

I'm a pensioner too. Moving to a cottage - no gas in the area. In any case any grants seem to be for 'replacement' whereas I don't have anything to start with. Plus in any case it seems there are benefit/income requirements. :(

Technically the grants can be claimed for any boiler, ashp, gshp, biomass, gas, oil, log etc whether new or replacement. But companies that certified to offer it are only getting certified to offer gas combi replacements because it it the most profitable. You can offer to top the grant up but again companies prefer not to do this as many companies look at some one who is eligible to claim for hhcro as going to be difficult to get payments out of. I am not saying people on here are bad payers just saying that's how it is.

  • If you live in NI be sure to check the housing executive as they have various grants and funding available for all types of insulation and boiler replacements. If your household income is below £20k you are entitled to up to £7.5k under the affordable heating scheme.
