That would be a waste of money. I could tell someone how to hang a door in ten minutes, does not mean they would be able to..
Have you seen someone with no joinery skills try to use a plane, chisel, or cut a straight line with a hand saw etc?

    John...

If the OP has reasonable manual skills, then it should be possible, but they really will need a bench, preferably two, a decent chisel, a hammer, a right angle thing (:)), and a power plane (assuming lots to take off), which will cost a lot e.g. two work benches at £15 each, one plane at £40, one chisel at £8, one hammer at £8 = £86. And if they spend most of the time in a damp garage/shed, they will decay.
Maybe install a call recorder on your phone. I have one on my mobile phone, records ALL incoming and outgoing calls.

A friend was angry that his sister was being beaten up by her fiancee, so he rang him and left a message telling his that if he ever touched her again, he would beat the living daylights out of him. The recording was taken to the police, and he got a criminal record. In that case the law was an !!!!, but that is a good idea.

In my opinion this 'joiner' is guilty of poor communication, as well as poor workmanship by all accounts.
In my opinion both parties seem to be guilty of poor communication. No single person in any argument is 100% in the right. Poor workmanhip is only alleged without evidence to support the allegation. Thank you for the way you expressed the word 'joiner'. This is not a joinery task - its basic carpentry so why are peeps on this thread using the word joiner. Thats a far more skilled job and demands a higher price commensurate with skill and knowledge.

    Cheers

this is exactly what happens when you use 'a friend of a friend'.
my mum had her kitchen done by my brothers friend, a so called professional fitter.
overpriced, shoddy work, plus the window was fitted before the brickwork was complete! nice.....

Well who do you get in to hang a door?? What do you class a joiner as? someone who works in a workshop?

    John....

What gismo is that then. I dont have that on my gpo phone.
the reason I have a ring dial gpo phone is because my father died in 2010 and he was an engineer and its a classic piece of equipment that does not use electric and gives a lovely ring.

My mobile has messaging service, and to quote the other person who made a comment about bad communication on both sides, you are wrong.

HE SAID HE WOULDNT BE BACK FOR WEEKS, NOT ONCE DID HE CALL MY MOBILE OR LEAVE A MESSAGE AND HE KNEW I WORKED FOUR DAYS A WEEK. SO IF IM AT WORK HOW ON EARTH AM I GOING TO KNOW HE CALLED AT THE DOOR WHEN IM NOT THERE??????
ALSO YOU CANT LEAVE MESSAGES ON MY LANDLINE.
THE FIRST I KNEW OF IT WAS WED MORNING WHEN I HAD JUST COME DOWN FROM A SHOWER.
HE TOLD ME HE WOULD CONTACT ME, I TOLD HIM I WAS NOT IN A RUSH. I TRUSTED HIM, HE THEN ASSUMED BECAUSE I WASNT THERE TO ANSWER THE DOOR IM AN AVOIDER- RUBBISH!!!

Today the police called me to say they had spoken to him warned him not to threaten me again and he confirmed he is not going to contact me. The police have passed on mine and his details to the office of fair trading.

In future I will stick to three quotes from professionals - it worked always before and never had problems. Always pay the full balance once the work is completed.;)

You might be right though I do argue the point that "No single person in any argument is 100% in the right". When you are attacked by a mugger, or verbally abused in the street by a stranger on the grounds of your colour/race, how are you in the wrong?

The OP refers to the trade removing wood from one end only, and going right through the frame, and if true, then he is not good. And the OP says he took longer than I would, which raises concerns.

A joiner makes doors, windows, staircases etc and an example of a very skilled joiner is one who is called a cabinet maker. A chippy is not the same animal as a joiner.

I wouldn't mind an orthopeadic surgeon helping me mend a broken fence but I'm damned if I'd allow a fencer to help him fix my busted leg.

Anyways this bloke wasn't even a half decent handyman by all accounts.

Fair point unless there is provocation involved in the first instance. But you make a fair point and I concede it - lets not get into the minutae of it.

Agreed but there are always two sides to a story.

I didn't say that and there's no need to shout.

You did so keystone and capital letters does not mean shouting.
Why would I want to lie about something ?
I would have a conscience if I felt that I did something wrong. I didnt. There was no bad communication from me at all. We both agreed at £60 including cost of door.
He only pulled his face when I gave him half.

Eg tomorrow Im hoping to get out in the car to my friend's who is going to fit a second hand roof to my mx5 as mine was vandalised. Cost of fitting is £70 cash. He has done work for me before and we trust each other and he knows I always pay him on a completed job. He will complete the roof and I will pay him £70 on the day, i drive home happy, hes happy that my car is fixed. He always texts me later to check and texts 'everything ok?'

This guy who did my door told me he wouldnt be back for weeks.
so I carried on with my everyday stuff until he contacted me when he was ready.

Believe what you want to believe but I assure you I pay my way!
