If the first joiner had not fitted the door within 3 hours, he was not a joiner.....

    Butterflies.

Working with a 'real' joiner day in day out the gy you had was more of a wood butcher! you last chap was entirely correct in that an egg crate door should be trimmed both top and bottom if any substantial material has to be removed. Glad you got it sorted.

Now the dodgy bit. I can see all parties views here re how you 'could' be perceived. Unfortunately, email and the like (which is what this is) is a terrible medium for putting across how you feel. In my humble opinion your anger and frustration spilled over a little and it was prob that which others misread. The simple fact of the matter is that if there are two ways to interpret something when using email it will be the 'wrong' one that's picked - unless you take very great care!

Like I said, glad you got it resolved and even better you now have a name of a proper joiner so every cloud has a silver lining :D. Good luck.

I would not take the threat seriously. I once hooted at a coach which was moving into my lane. At the lights the driver got out walked up to me and said something like "I'm going to find out where you live and sort you". Turns out the coach company was less than 50m from my house. So I reported him to his bosses. A lot of people are mouthy, and anger quickly. He'll forget about this. And even I could completely hang a door in less time, without taking too much off one end. Did you mention this to Paul? I'm sure he could smooth out this person's issues.

  • I paid around £40 a door a few years back, and he also took but of top and bottom so it looked right. That said my joiner didnt fit handles right on one door and them came undone he didnt fit enough screws in iit and was the only one of the 4 doors which the locking mechanism catches. I think it took around an hour per door, fitting two stainless hinges

yes exactly! durrrrrr lets see now, I could have given him the whole lot and never seen him again. When paying cash only give the full amount when the job is completely finished!

    £20 + £10 = £30 which is what i gave him.

next appointment £30 would have been paid - result finished job and the guy got his £40 labour + £20 door.

Anyway got a tradesmen coming in ten minutes £30 to finish the job.

    You gave him £10 and B&Q £20. You didn't give him £30. Durrrh yourself.:p

    The OP gave him £30.

If I buy a new car for £6K, I don't say I gave the garage £1K and the manufacturer £5K. That would be daft.

Anyway, sounds like the OP is best rid of this person.

What? Try giving that a moment's thought.

Of the £40 he quoted for fitting how much did the joiner get?

If he's not managed to fit a door in 21/2 hours he's not that great a joiner. It's guys like this that make me attempt these things myself...okay so I too chopped too much off the bottom but that was remedied with a strip of wood shaved to same width and glued in, looks fine now (or will do when I finally get round to putting the handle on ) Did you not fancy having a go yourself?

Monday night i was in bed and my GPO STYLE DIAL TELEPHONE was ringing and I was very tired.
I got one of these just after Christmas!

I agree. It took me a day to hang four new doors (three needed shortening) and swap the door furniture. I'd done it once before. They are all fine.
