What would you like to make with the wool? I use a system learned from a book where I can make any type of jumper to fit from any thickness of wool - and it fits a lot better than any pattern because you make the jumper to your own size. I can explain it a bit more if you are interested. The book explaining the technique is by Lynne Vogel and called 'the Twisted Sisters knit Sweaters - a knit-to-fit Workshop'. It might be an idea to invest in a book like this so you can take advantage of any bargain wool in future."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

Take a look at the knitters thread, and search on "free". That gave several posts containing free patterns.
I'll add this thread to the main one later to keep ideas together.

I managed to snag a great deal in the John Lewis clearance, some Debbie Bliss Stella wool. Only problem is it's one of those new wools whereby they want you to buy a pattern book (£8.00 ish) as opposed to a single pattern. I'm loath to do this as apart from the cost, I'm not likely (unless I get another bargain wool buy) to make anything else in this wool. I've managed via googling to find one free pattern but I'm not that keen on it. Before I get out of deadline for returning the wool, does anyone know anywhere else (or have a pattern and be willing to share) I could get a free pattern from? Thanks,
Use the free pattern to get the tension and needle size and then use that to find a comparable pattern.0 -
Hi Savannah02k, If you look at the ball band it will tell you the tension 17sts x 24 rows on 5mm looks like aran weight to me or near enough. Have you got any old aran patterns you could adapt? There are loads of free patterns on the web, just google free knitting patterns. Also www.knitty.com is a good place for trendy patternsSave £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000

How about going on ravelry? The address is www.ravelry.com - you have to go on their waiting list to join it, but it's free and it doesn't take long before they send you an invite to join (about 3 days, I've just checked). They have FABULOUS patterns and many of them are free. Basically, in case you've never heard of it, it's an online community where people post photos of the things they're knitting - you get loads of designers on there who put their patterns up for free or are happy to share. I love it! You can search by type of garment, by wool/yarn or just browse most popular patterns. I am sure you'd find something. The other great thing is that you find a pattern you like and you'll see a button which says "10 projects", you click on it and find 10 photos of versions of that pattern that people are making - very useful if you're wondering whether the pattern you like would look nice in the colour you've got.
I also discovered (as an aside) that there are people who knit the strangest things - all sorts of Dr Who stuff (tardises and daleks, natch, but toy Adipose seem to be a particular favourite for some reason). Mind you, if they could knit me a David Tennant, I wouldn't say no...but I think I'd draw the line at a purple knitted beard for one girl who was going to a party with a "beard" theme - not sure I'd wear it myself but kudos to her for not only knitting it but posting a picture of herself wearing it... :rotfl:

i bought some oatmeal colour aran wool (dk ithink) with the intention of knitting a jumper for ds1 xmas present last year. i printed out loads from free patterns off website but always ran into problems such as knitted garment once finished would be too big, he takes a size small generally and is your average size 17 year old. or the pattern was too difficult i loved the cable look but cant decrease when doing cable whole thing looked a mess. so need a basic pattern perhaps combining a knit and purl stitch in some variation. would like to have another bash at doing it for this christmas. he would like a polo neck. does anyone out there have a fail proof pattern they could share with me would be most grateful0

Hi homealone,
Well done for sticking with it and not letting your bad experience put you off!
Did you knit a tension square the first time around? It's a bore but worth it in the end to make sure your finished article is the size it should be. If you're using a different wool than the one the pattern is meant for, a tension square is even more important. You also want to try to find a pattern for a similar wool thickness.
This website has a good range of free patterns http://www.berroco.com/item_fr/fr_men_boys_01.html There's a few men's ones and the one called Andoa looks fairly straightforward using a pattern made up of knit and purl stitches, although it's not a polo neck.
I'll have a look and see what patterns I might have in PDF. If you're interested or need any further help please PM me, very happy to help.
Good luck!0
