If you have the basics of knitting the rest is easy. I don't really like it though, I'm too impatient - I crochet a lot because all those holes make it go much faster!

    Hi all,

I recently learnt to knit, a new hobby which I am enjoying immensely. I have knitted two scarves and two bags so far, I'm half way through another scarf and am considering a hat.

However, the patterns are quite expensive. Even in my local Boyes (where I get some nice cheap yarn) I find they're £2.50 a go! I've found some free ones online but they're all a bit old for me (I'm only 25) and I'd like something a bit more trendy. When I sew I make my own patterns, so I was wondering whether anyone had any ideas/guides/tips for me for making my own knitting patterns?

Any pointers, to good books, websites or anything like will be gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance

I found this site for my daughter age 22. /www.angelyarns.com/sirdar/sirdar-patterns.php Some are free. She has started knitting some of these. Also I have bought lots of patterns on e bay. Things that were fashionable in 50s have come back into fashion. Daughter also bought a really old knitting book in a charity shop with loads of really old designs that she wants to knit for herself. We are both knitting addicts now.

Knitty, as mentioned above, is great. I've also befriended someone who has masses of books - then you can just borrow them for the patterns you want.

Must finish that cardi now from a borrowed book!

Do some socks as well - they're sooo warm and there are a fair few patterns avaliable free (some sites give you a free pattern when you purchase the yarn)....

Ask at the local library - they will have a shelf of knitting books through in the stock room. Why there? I once asked - because noone asks for them hehe:rotfl:

I like knitty too. Here are some other websites with free knitting patterns:
    www.freevintageknitting.com
    www.helloyarn.com/freepatterns.htm
    Drops Design www.garnstudio.com
www.lionbrand.com (You have to register but it is pretty painless and they have a lot of patterns with a useful search facility and don't spam you.)
    www.theanticraft.com
spunmag.com Not being updated but chaeck out the back issues.
www.magknits.com Have a look at the archives as well as the patterns in the current issue.
    www.marniemaclean.com/patterns
  • also have a look at https://www.knittingpatterncentral.com they've got lots of links to free patterns

Ah, I wish I had friends who were into knitting! I did manage to get some free needles from my MIL and also from her mum!
I also did a trawl around the charity shops, I think that for a total of about £10 (if that) I managed to get a "full set" of sizes - from 00 to 14, only missing an 8 I think! And some nice double pointed needles too.

If you need knitting yarns, Age Concern do big balls of plain colours quite reasonably and I use e bay for fancy yarns.
