From where I'm sitting my 5 year old carpetright looks fine thank very much and was a very reasonable price, a good few years left in it.
I think most people are quite well aware of how things work and realise they aren't really getting 70% discount.
Like has been said if you feel you've been ripped off then follow up your complaint with OFT but stop squealing because nobody so far has agreed with you.0 -

Lets say someone buys 6x4 of carpet for the living room.
Its on a 30m roll that weighs half a ton, if they bought a full roll, they are stuck with it until they sell the lot, if they buy a cut, the warehouse charges a cutting rate. It has to be handled and cut, thats an hour gone for two men, then loaded on the van, that costs around £20k, then driven to the house, thats another hour gone and £30 in van running costs, then they have to uplift the old, another hour gone, refelt and re-gripper, another hour, then fit the carpet, two hours and drive back, another £30 in van costs.
So its costs £60 in transport, 2 mens wages for 5 hours each.
Hardly the huge mark up.

It's the same as buying a latte from Starbucks, it'll cost them about 25p to make and they charge about £2.50, a 10x markup -- but they have to pay the £100k/yr rent&rates, £250/day wage bill, ect ect ect. Yet the burger van down the road charges a quid fifty. Not sure exactly how prices can be regulated and how you would determine the 'market value' for manyh products0

If you don't understand what it says, why have you presented it to others?
I cannot post links unfortunately but the qoute is directly from the OFT relating to prohibited practice.
I have used the word FACT as i understand this industry fully & know the pricing structures used as a general standard... i can tell you with the utmost certainty that anything more than 200% mark up on a list price is an isolated practice used by Carpetright, Allied & united carpets & beds... its a national chain stratergy which is completely out of line with realistic product value.... Do the Math!
50% off.. then a further 20% off = astronomical inflation of realistic market value & an average mark up of roughly 375% across the product range, that is before the 500% - 1200% mark up on accessories..... 100% is toward the high end of mark up on average within the rest of the carpet industry ( & that is list price)0 -

Isn't pretty much everything in the advertising industry to do with affecting the economical behaviour of the consumer?

Oh dear! :rotfl:Carpetright use sub contract fitters, who are paid by the customer!! They then charge the customer £29 to deliver the carpet, which the fitter does & none of that goes to the fitter!! It costs them nothing i'm afraid to say... in fact they have just ripped the customer off for another £29.. maybe it's best if you go back to sleep!! :eek:0
