A similar story. My Gran left her wedding ring to me. I had it resized and the girl I was marrying had it as a wedding ring - that way my Gran was remembered every day.
That lady is my ex-wife now, but she did have the decency to give it back to me when we divorced. I regret it now sits in a box with other memorabilia now though.0 -
I think that was a lovely thought to have about the sun catching the ring Violetta, not daft at all.
I have so many wonderful memories of my nan, and photos of her. I dont know if others have felt this but I have felt panicky on and off. I have been worried that somehow I would forget little things about her, how she looked, her voice etc. The photos and memories are nice but she felt distant through them. Now I have been given her ring it is something solid to hold and really remember her by. She feels just that little bit closer to me again, which is very comforting.
It has been a day of tears and laughter and I am feeling very tired. Think a glass of wine and some of the OH cooking is what I need now. He is trying to compromise by suggesting takeaway, dangerous move considering I am on MSE and could set you lot on him.Grammar: The difference between knowing your !!!!!! and knowing you're !!!!!! :cool:0 -
My Granddad gave me my grandma's engagement ring after she died. Now my complexion is such that yellow gold jewellery doesn't look right, besides her fingers were so small that it didn't fit any of my fingers other than my little finger. I decided though I didn't want it just shoved in a box that I'd never look in.
I talked to MrD (well he listened anyway), and I decided that I wanted to have a ring made - using the sapphire from my 21st birthday ring (which MrD bought me) and the two smaller diamonds from my grandma's engagement ring. I approached both my mum and my granddad for permission, and we all welled up over it.
(I did warn MrD that by comissioning this ring for me he was agreeing to be with me forever cause the thought of breaking my grandma's engagement ring for a ring that I couldn't wear if we broke up would kill me lol)
But as I sit here I'm wearing (what I call) my non-engagement ring (because it was given to me a few months before we became engaged, and no other ring could take it's place). I am proud that I wear a piece of my Grandma day in day out. She was a very dear lady, who I take after in so many ways. It is such an honor.
I'm rambling a bit and my words aren't coming out in a proper order (or even grammatically correct); but I thought I'd share my story!0 -
get it resized and make use of it would be my opinion
shame for it to be hidden away0 -
On similar lines - all the women in my 'chain' on my Mum's side of the family have always - as far back as memory goes - had 18ct yellow gold Wedding Rings.
The Wedding Rings get passed on to the daughter (thankfully only one in each generation) and are melted down with the daughter's ring & a new one made.
My Mum is currently the owner & wearer of this Wedding Ring with so many happy memories in it.
I hope it is an exceedingly long time until it becomes mine. :j:D:beer::eek::A:p:rotfl::cool::):(:T0 -
My Grandmother gave me her engagement ring before she died - I didn't wear it for ages as it was too big and the band was yellow gold and none of my other jewellery is yellow and it looked very much like an engagement ring and as I'm not married or engaged that would look a bit odd. Last year I had the diamond reset in a white gold band and I now wear it for special occasions. Having the diamond cleaned and polished really helped too - it sparkles now!......0

Whatever you do, I'd ensure you wear it. I'm just mulling over what to do with a watch my grandmother gave me: it's way too big for me and the strap can't be adjusted.
I know what I want to do with it and that my nan would have been happy with that. If it had been a ring I'd definitely have got it re-sized to wear it.... MFW 2019#24 £9474.89/£11000 MFW 2018#24 £23025.41/£15000

I wear my Nan's ring everyday, it is too big for the intended finger, so I just pop it on the finger that it does fit on.
It's an inset ring, rather than a sticky out gem type ring, so 6 diamonds around a sapphire, and two sapphires either side. (hope you know what I mean)
I know my Mum's jewellery is also in a safe place somewhere in the house
perhaps I ought to find it and wear her stuff too.
If you don't want to resize it, can you get one of those inner inserts to pad it out a bit?0 -
I hadn't thought about getting inserts. Not sure that would work as my fingers are way smaller. I am coming round to the idea of having the ring resized and wearing it now though.
My nan was a very sensible, down to earth type, who made the most of everything. I dont think she would mind a jot that her ring was made a bit smaller so it could be worn and used to remember her. She had some beautiful jewellery that had been past down to her and thinking about it she never hid it away unused.
Thank you to everyone who has replied. You have helped me loads.Grammar: The difference between knowing your !!!!!! and knowing you're !!!!!! :cool:0
