Virgin Media router/modem/internet problem
Comments

And the router has WPA security key switched on? (ie - no one is can possibly connect to it?)
Edit: the other options (which aren't selected) are WEP, WPA-PSK[TKIP], WPA2-PSK[AES], and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise.
If, when it next stops working properly, I try and access the router setting page, would that show if the wireless was working OK? Because if I can access it wirelessly, then the wireless must be working? And if I can't, either the modem/router has crashed somehow or the wireless is broken?
I'd rather not have to spend money on an ethernet cable that I will never use again if I don't have to.0 -

you should always have an ethernet cable in the house for testing/backup
have you looked at what they cost?
what did you do with the one that came with the router?0 -

The cost is not relevant, I cannot get to a shop for over a week (work during week, do not drive so cannot visit late opening retail park).
I don't remember one coming with the router, possibly I told the cable guy to take it away as I didn't need it.0 -

yup, quaint and old school
I'll leave you to it, as it seems you are too advanced for any form of trouble shooting

How would an iPhone, however advanced, enable my PS3, TV, and laptop to connect to my broadband connection? All iPhones can connect to the internet via 3G, my iPhone is the only computery thing I have that is not badly affected by this connection problem. Seems a very odd thing to mention!0 -

no more odd, than mentioning 3g in the context of trouble shooting a possible broadband issue.0 -
You have a VMDG280 modem - Virgin are now dishing out the Netgear VMNG480 as replacements or for new installations. These are the much better routers/modems (whichever you choose).
I would phone Virgin up tomorrow, let them send an engineer if they want to. When the engineer does turn up, a good cuppa should persuade them to change the router over for a new one for you.
In the meantime, it might be worth checking out your signal levels. I don't know if this is different for the VMDG280, but the way to do it on the VMNG480 is as follows:
1) Log in to the router, by going to http://192.168.100.1/ and enter the username and password.
2) At the next screen, choose Advanced Settings.
3) On the left hand side, under the Maintenance heading, choose Connection.
4) Submit the information using copy and paste the information into a post here.0 -

I have Virgin and my wireless keeps dropping out as well, but I also have a wired connection and that drops out at the same time! I suspect yours would if you tried it!
As for wired connections not reaching other rooms ?
I have wired connections between 4 different rooms and before you ask, the wires are all hidden but then I am not just old school I am old0 -
If the wired connections drop too-chances are you'd seen a light go out/change colour on the router -meaning it's the physical connection that has the issue. The OP is resistant to doing this so I guess will be doing the switch on and off dance a while longer til it gets worse <shrug>
I get this a lot at work -people put up with it for months before ringing-and often it's resolved within 5-10 mins and speed often increases too -but if the OP doesn't want to -that entirely their perrogative if an ethernet cable is just too much for themI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
