Virgin Media router/modem/internet problem

As time went on I think all the ISPs woke up to people having multiple things online and started doing the whole router and everything you need offers more and more... but you're being unecessarily rude and confrontational (as usual) and just trying totally unconstructively to pick holes and contributing nothing useful at all.
Depending on how strong you're feeling (I'd advocate preparing a stiff drink in advance) I'd take it up with tech support and try to get a modem swap done - but it's a migraine inducing experience sometimes (when they did swap our modem over they managed to muck up the changeover so it didn't immediately fix the problem either until someone actually checked and they hadn't updated it on their computer system).
I had the old surfboard modem that went into a router (i purchased)
then i went to a wifi enabled router
then later i went wirelss G ,then onto N
its only in the last year I have had the 'Superhub'
it still makes no difference to how the net comes into the house or the options available from that point.
so I refer you back to my simple question
whats the difference between them supplying a modem or modem/router with regard to how many PCs you have?0 -
You need to rule out wireless issues, and connecting by ethernet is the only way to do that. Can you please post the exact make and models of modem and router?0

Netgear VMDG280
which is why you need to know if its a wirelss problem or not......0 -

It takes seconds to plug a laptop up so you can find if the issue is 'just' with wireless or not.
The laptop cannot stay downstairs, there is no room - there is one room downstairs, the laptop could either be left in front of a radiator where it would melt, or on a kitchen worksurface, which makes me uneasy as it would be rather near water. It is 17 or 19" screen (I don't remember, too big either way), it will not fit on the shelves.
I cannot leave it on the floor.0 -
Does anyone in the house use P2P? Netgear routers in particular dont seem to like it when the virgin traffic management policy kicks in:idea:0

So you want us to diagnose the problem but your not willing to plug a laptop in via ethernet to try?? Not even once??:idea:0 -

I suppose the TV could be doing stuff, it can connect to the internet, but I don't think it does any downloading in the background - certainly to update the drivers/OS/software (not sure what it's called when it's for a TV) you have to tell it to manually check.0 -

I'm just saying even if I do it will probably not be of any use, as it will take so long the router/modem could spontaneously start working again on its own.0 -
And the router has WPA security key switched on? (ie - no one is can possibly connect to it?):idea:0
