Computer not recognising the mouse, need to access file urgently!

Hello

For some reason my computer does not recognise the mouse. I`ve plugged it in different USB ports and also tried other mouses but it still won`t work. The keyboard works fine but i need to urgently access a file on the computer and don`t know how to without the mouse!

Will it work in Safe Mode? Press F8 when the computer is starting to enter Safe Mode.

    Ctrl+Esc to get start menu

Cursor up and down to get to My Documents or My Computer, and to select folder or file within Explorer

Return to accept option highlighted by moving cursor keys
  • Shut down your computer.
    Plug in your mouse.
    Start up the computer.

If done in that order it should fix it. (providing the mouse isn't broken)

If it were a PS2 mouse, that may work. However, the OP is using a USB mouse.

Uninstall the mouse and then reinstall it via Device Manager.
But give that you can get them for a couple of quid, I wouldn't waste too much time on it.
In the meantime, do you not have a spare one (or can you not borrow one)?

    OP has tried different mice!

It might be difficult to delete/re-install the mouse driver if they cannot access Device Manager easily.

Hence why I suggested Safe Mode.

Sorry, I missed that. Curious if it's neither a problem specific to one USB port, nor a hardware failure?
Is there maybe a PS2 port available that the OP could use with an older mouse or a converter?

This should help you remove the mouse driver, if you use Windows 7:
    1) Pess the Start menu key on your keyboard (in between the Ctrl and Alt keys at the bottom left of your keybard).
    2) Type in Device Manager, then wait until Device Manager appears and is highlighted, then press the Enter key on the keyboard.
    3) When the Device Manager window opens, press the Tab key on your keyboard (the Tab button usually says Tab on it, with two arrows like these under each other: |<-- and -->|).
    4) Press the Down key (this almost always has an solo arrow pointing down on it) until you highlight Mice and other pointing devices.
    5) Now press the + key, which will expand (if not already) to show any devices under that catergory.
    6) Using the Down arrow key, highlight any devices, press the Delete key (sometimes called Del) - when prompted, just press the Enter key. Make sure you delete all devices under the Mice category, but nowhere else!
    7) At this stage unplug your mouse if it is connected.
    8) Press the Start menu key, then press the Right arrow key - this should highlight the Shut down option in the Start menu. When it does highlight, press Enter.

With the computer shut down and powered off, plug in the USB mouse where you usually plug it in at, and power the machine back on again.

I hope this helps you get your mouse working again!
