Help to Identify a Cable

Good Morning

I have a Dell PC 'Dimension C521'. The cable which I need help with is the cable that runs from the base unit to the Monitor. I think the connection is DVI.

The connection from the cable into the Pc is as follows:

I have a cable on it's own which I think is a splitter as It has written on it 1 & 2. The end of this cable which goes into the pc is a male 24 pin. At the end of this cable it's split into two 'female' (as above 1&2)

I then have a cable running from the monitor which say's DVI on the rear of the monitor 'male both ends'. This connects to either of the 1&2 which is in the base unit.

I hope the above makes sense!

Any ideas of the cable which Dell have supplied? I am out of warranty, and I did email Dell which I got no response.

The cable I need is the one that goes into the PC(the split one) but I don't need the splitter facility as I only use one monitor.

Any ideas also on cost to replace?

TIA
Regards,

The above contains a photo of a DVI and a VGA socket. The one on the right if a VGA. The DVI can be slightly different in that the - on the right hand side can be a + with a pin hole in each quadrant as DVI comes in both digital and analogue versions.

At a guess, given I can only find a US version of the C521 manual, the PC has a VGA socket and your monitor has a DVI-A input. You can therefore replace the two cables with a single VGA to DVI which you can pick up at Maplins, PC World etc

Thank you. I tried a vga cable to bypass the DVI but the screen just went blank!

    Will try maplins/pc world

    Thanks again

I would try eBay - PC World is very expensive for cables.

Generally the cable you are after is called a dvi dual link splitter.

You should just be able to plug the dvi cable (split to monitor) straight into the pc, the ports on my video card are dual link but .

As Robtang said, the cable that DELL supply is a dual DVI splitter. The cable from the splitter to your monitor is a standard DVI cable.

The splitter I believe is proprietary to DELL. Are you sure it has broken? Those connectors are quite robust.

    Something like this:

Just check the code matches the one you have. It may be printed on the connector or shown in the paperwork. There may be slight variations.

Be careful, that listing is for a VGA splitter:
Dual VGA Splitter in Blue (This is what you will recieve)
Dual DVI Splitter in White (Listed if required)
