Is a badge covered by the warranty?

Bought a Mondeo last summer when it was one year old (10 plate). It's due its second service in Feb (idiot first owner had it serviced after 10 months instead of 12, so we have to do it in Feb to maintain the one year service interval).

The Ford badge on the back of the boot is in awful condition. It was bad when we got the car (should have asked the dealer, I know) and it's got worse. It's really tatty - I don't know why as we never touch it - we use the handle inside the boot lid to close it.

Car's in great condition and the badge just looks rubbish. Do you think there's any chance they'd replace it under warranty or will I be laughed out of the dealer's for asking? :o

Why not ask the dealer and see what response you get? It should be covered if it is because of a manufacturing defect but if it has been damaged by carelessness then it won't be covered.

Previous owner had it serviced after a shorter interval and your complaining? :rotfl:

I think it is warranty item.... But really they're gonna think your taking the p!ss, when you could pick one up for less £ than a happy meal :rotfl:

Then when (if) you go in complaining of problems starting it, they'll just assume you one of these people who buy a new car and then can't afford to put more than £3 of fuel in it, inevitably run out at some point and then come back to complain when it's broken ;)

I think you've answered your own question:
"It was bad when we got the car (should have asked the dealer, I know) and it's got worse."
For the sake of a few quid I'd just get a new one and maintain a good relationship with the dealer...you jepodise their 'good will' in the future.

If you don't want to upset your usual dealer, then any ford dealer can be used for a warranty job.

Posters advising you to pay for it yourself must have forgotten where they are!

My point was that if the OP asks (and gets) a new badge fitted under warranty, it might be viewed by the garage as a frivoulous use of his warranty.
There are numerous posts on these forums that complain about businesses quibbling about warranty work so I was suggesting that in the interest of maintaining a good relationship with his garage that it might be prudent not to claim for a non functional and cheap piece of trim.
Had it been a bumper or a cracked headlight I'd view it differently of course but I was looking at the bigger/long term picture.
    Penny wise, pound foolish.

How can you "frivously" use a warranty?

Ford are pretty quick to deny warranty claims if they can!

My suggestion would avoid the OP getting a reputation (if he's bovvered) at his own dealer!

Can't you buy a new one (for a few quid) and stick it on yourself?

I very much suspect that the badge is covered under the warranty and I know at least two people who have had badges replaced on nearly three year old cars. Not Fords though.

As long as the thing hasn't deteriorated due to fair wear and tear or abuse, I would take it down to the dealer and ask. They may take photos and send them back to Ford for a decision.

We don't have a regular Ford dealer. This is our first Ford and we got it from a dealer 10-15 miles from home. We'll be using the dealer in our town for the service as they're closest. So, I have no qualms about upsetting a dealer. I'll ask nicely about the badge and see what they say. :) If I annoy them then there's three other Ford dealers within 20 miles we can use in the future.

The reason I complained about the first owner servicing it early is that it means we have to service it in Feb instead of April, and so pay the bill sooner. Car was registered in April 2010. They had it serviced in Feb 2011 and then traded it in a couple of months later. Ford told me that to preserve the warranty, I have to stick to the 12 month service interval - i.e. I can't wait till April to service it when the car will actually be 2 years old. It's not that a big deal, just irritating. :) Do wonder what went wrong with the car to make him get it serviced after 10 months, but we've had no problems with it.
