I fill the bath with soapy hot water.

Heat the oven on high for 20 mins, then carefully with an oven glove or tea towel remove the shelves then place in the bath, using an old tea towel hold the metal shelves whilst you use a soap pad, you will find the muck comes off really quickly.

I use soap pads on the base of my oven, its never damaged it, but if you don't want to do that, a little elbow grease and a warm oven will help to remove most of the gunk, be careful about warm/hot ovens.

I use two fresh lemons cut into halves in a bowl covered with boiling water. Put the oven on low just to heat it up a bit and i leave in for 30 minutes, or longer depending on how bad it is. When you start to get a lemony scent in the kitchen it is done and the grease and gunk will slide off on a cloth with hot soapy water.

ETA: two lemons costs around 40p, gives a fresh scent and chemical free. I like this method because it is easy and I am lazy (when it comes to oven cleaning)

I have been putting off cleaning the oven for ages because I don't like the oven cleaner we have and also it is REALLY greasy. We are going to try this after dinner.

I use Oven pride like wallbash does. It comes with a bag where you put all your wire shelves in it and a few hours later they are like new. Best oven cleaner i have ever used and there no scrubbing wit wire wool . Costs about £4 but lots in the container
  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I will give the lemons a try to start with as it sounds like the easiest option if it works on the amount of grease we have, if not i'll try the bicarb and if no luck i'll give in and buy some oven pride. Will probably tackle at the weekend and rope hubby in to help!!
  • Hi

well i had the same problem a couple of months ago and asked the same question - mine was terrible and we were moving house!

I took the shelves and all the removable chrome parts and put them in the oven pride bag - left them soaking for about 24 hours.(oven pride is magical stuff!!)

I then took the doors off and soaked them in the bath filled with biological washing powder, and left them to soak for hours and hours. Then tackled them with one of those wiry non metallic ball things - (know what I mean?!?).

The inside I squired with neat stardrops and just scrubbed and scrubbed with another of those wiry things.

A bit of elbow grease required - but not too bad!

Then when I moved into my new house I had too do it all over again because the slobs that we bought from left the oven even worse than my old one had been!:eek: Had not thought that would be possible! :rotfl::rotfl:

  • My oven is the same and I'm now attempting to sort and clean my house and it is bugging me beyond belief. I have been recommended a local oven cleaning company, and although not money saving (£40) he cleans it and brings it back to as new condition. All bits are taken outside so no nasty chemicals in your home. I know people swear by the lemon juice and bicarb but I honestly think my oven is beyond that stage :o I thought hubby would say a big fat NO when I suggested it but he agreed to get it clean as a new oven then work hard to keep it like that. So I've put £20 away this month and am going to do the same next payday and get him in. I have fibromyalgia and would struggle to get down and scrub for long enough and my poor hubby is working hard to keep his job, so I think it will be worth the cost as a one-off.

I used this method on my oven last night, the grease etc was pretty baked on. It didn't work brilliantly but I think started to loosen everything, so I turned the oven off and poured water onto the ingrained stuff. It started to get rid of it but not in some places so I rubbed the lemon in directly to the oven too and it really helped. Oven still not 100% but I am going to buy some Oven Pride today and am also going to borrow my mum's steamer as I know that works. Hopefully we will have an 'as good as new' oven soon.
