When the oven is bad :o I sprinkle the bottom with washing powder and add a cup of boiling water. Turn oven on high and let it all steam off. You have to keep topping the water up every 5 mins or so and keep scraping (depending on how bad it has got). Just taken me about 3/4 hour to get it decent again.

I use astonish paste to get the grill and metal bits up to scratch using a scourer. If its really bad I would use Brillo. I do the outside stainless steal and glass part with Babyoil! Makes it shine and smear free.

Once clean its a good idea to line with tin foil (or you can buy some reusable liners for your oven)

There has been a thread on this before and Oven Pride was recommended again and again. I think it's ten times better than the Mr. Muscle I used to use. If you haven't cleaned the oven in five years you might need the entire pack (£4 Home Bargains), I only use half each time as mine is not too baked on. If you leave Oven Pride on long enough (overnight) there is virtually no elbow grease required, everything just rinses off. I am guilty of getting impatient .... :o

  • Hi Guys,

Just wondering what you use to clean the baking trays and wire racks in your ovens? I tried to give them a good scrub, but they are quite black and nothing seems to be moving the stains. I have tried the oven pride cleaning kit which worked well, but I needed two kits and was hoping there maybe an alternative (cheaper) way?

Also, I've been lining the bottom of my oven with tin foil to stop all the bits sticking to the bottom, but I've noticed that on the Tesco value foil it says not to use it in ovens. Do they just mean when your using it on food? Will it be okay on the bottom of the oven, or will it be releasing fumes?

    Thanks for your help!

When something is stuck solid on my trays etc i just put a little warm water on and squirt on some fairy. Leave it for a bit and then it comes of with the green side of a sponge.

I get foil from Tesco and have never had a problem. But it could mean for prolonged use, like at the bottom of your cooker? You can buy sheets that are specifically made for the bottom of the oven, they arent expensive and are non stick so everything will just wipe straight off.

    Hi chickien,

There's an earlier thread with lots of ideas for cleaning the oven and shelves that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

  • Whenever I need to clean out my oven without scrubbing away the protective lining with steel wool I use Baking Soda.

It works a treat. I just apply a paste of Baking Soda and water to the warm oven, leave it overnight and then wipe it off.

I found this any many other useful ideas on http://www.ideas-to-save-money.com/baking-soda-uses.php, including a tip for regular oven cleaning. Simply apply the paste to a cold oven, then warm the oven for about 30 minutes and then wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

ok here's a slightly crazy question but why do people clean inside their ovens? I've NEVER done mine - the sides are self cleaning, the bottom lined with a lakeland thingy and the glass wiped occassionally but thats it. It works perfectly so I see n need to waste time, money and pump unnecessary chemicals into the world just so the shelves sparkle for a few weeks till it needs doing again.

Am I just slothenly or are any other mr muslces dodgers out there prepared to fess up???
