  • I think it is still very early days for most of these services in the UK. Content is still fairly limited and broadband speeds in most parts of the country will only realistically allow for streaming of sd quality films and shows.

Am trying out "Now Tv" (30 day free trial, if stay on there's 3 discounted months after the free trial)

(£1.10 has been pre-authorised from my card which is annoying, but at least it's not £15 like reported in the past. I had to use an alternative email address as I had a sky ID in the past)

Early impressions there isn't a great deal to wet my appetite but movie content is newer, some of the movies I've seen at the cinema in the past year or so are there.

(I always forget about cash back but that might be a route for you and paid out if you stay on after the trial I think)

*Love Film* sent me a welcome back code but it was invalid (pointless sending it really) as they gave me 3 for 1 by phone last Autumn. I might have tried the DVD by post if it had worked. (Along with the instant service)
  • I've had free trials for both Lovefilm and Netflix. I seem to have had similar experiences to other people in that the search facility on Lovefilm is dire. If you search for something, it you can't select the format you want, it lists every TV episode separately not in order etc.

Netflix had a better selection, especially of TV show, of things I want to see, but still doesn't have a vast selection and things take a while to become available.

I have a smart TV and internet connected BD player, so I can access my accounts through these. But I would like to point out that if you want to access either Lovefilm or Netflix via an XBox, you need to pay for a Gold Live membership on top of any subscription for the film service. This is fine if you use the Gold services for gaming, but seems a bit of a con if you don't. Neither the Wii or PS3 require you to pay to use what are now considered to be quite common services. I only had an Xbox to use as a media streamer before I got the BD player that can stream stuff from my network server. I'm going to sell the Xbox now, because I have no use for it.

    Anyone want an Xbox?

The latest streaming site that I've been enjoying a free trial from is Mubi - I couldn't find any other mention of this one on here so thought I'd post. A 7 day free trial is available through the site or at least 30 days through other links (eg from the Picturehouse website). One film is added per day and available for 30 days so the 30 day trial gives you access to 60 films. After the free trial it's only £2.99 a month or £1.99 per month if you sign up for a year so quite good value if you like the selection. The films range from recent to classics in black and white but is definately towards the film festival or arthouse range (typically the types of films shown in independent cinemas).

I've also tried the free trials for Netflix and Nowtv but so far have exhausted all the films I wanted to watch and hadn't already seen on them during the one month period. Haven't decided if I'll pay for Mubi yet since I also subscribe to Lovefilm but so far have found more films I want to watch than on Netflix and Nowtv.
