Do you, or anyone you know, shoot living things for sport?

Imo any cruelty to any living thing is abhorrent.
However, I cannot reconcile the argument put forward that 'x' isn't so bad when you consider 'y' is worse.
Each and every instance should be considered on it's own merits and not judged against another situation.
That said, the example you gave is disgusting and just proves how some members of society should receive that which they give out.
I used to date a lad years ago who worked at Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh and was responsible for the greyhounds. They were treated well and a lot of the lads looked after them as if they were pets. Clearly not all were as lucky judging by your post.

One hand it says the birds are fed up to the day of the shoot and then it says many die of starvation? This is a very interesting website about pheasant shooting and how 35 million are special bred, while they are imprisoned many die from diesases, starvation and being hit by cars before they even get shot....

And it says many are not eaten (it has been reported)......... well according to the basc guidelines as quoted before, they should get a plan to deal with the birds before they are shot. And I've never seen one go to waste.
And many don't get lost and die of wounds either, hardly ever.
And fenn traps are already illegal.
I could go on.....Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
It's like anything, there will always be good and bad people doing it.
Yes some greyhounds are treated badly, but so are pet horses and dogs. Should we ban people keeping horses and dogs?
Should we tell everyone blanket statements how these poor animals are starved and beaten?
Of course not, because we know that only a few people do it. I can't stand these ridiculous arguments where they tar everyone doing it, with the same brush.
For goodness sake, if you want to have a discussion about it, then start with a reasonable argument.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I think that a lot of the problems between the two sides of discussions like this is that most humans have become more & more detached from how nature & it's management work.
In fact, some people are totally clueless about where their food comes from..... other than a supermarket. I've met kids who think milk magically appears in a bottle & are appalled that it might come from a smelly cow :rotfl:
Some can also have a rather strange idea of kindness as in the case of this woman.

Many are happy to keep animals in their own homes (even flats) but can't see that is as unnatural as keeping chickens in confined spaces. Both are done for human enjoyment.
How many people who get on their high horses about conditions farm animals are kept in, for example, keep large dogs which they can't exercise without letting them loose in public areas? Animal lovers? They genuinely like to think they are.
How many people use the excuse that it's natural for their dog to chase something but condemn hunting hounds that do likewise?
Most country people genuinely respect the animals, birds & environment around them. Sometimes this involves things which other people may find distasteful. The countryside isn't a chocolate box cover. It's a large & often smelly factory.
Perhaps everyone should look to themselves more before judging others?0 -

And of course Animal Aid have no agenda, and will provide an unbiased report.0 -

Is this directed at me?
Of course you are right, not ALL greyhounds are treated badly, and I should have written that in my post.
I was merely trying to give a comparison between greyhound racing and country pursuits, perhaps it was a bad example.0 -
I haven't read everything, but some people have put some great informative posts up here. I don't have a problem at all with people shooting birds for food, just as long as the animal doesn't suffer too much (and I think that being shot is one of the more humane methods of killing a bird that otherwise is allowed to live "free range"). And if the person enjoys doing it then I also don't see a problem.
This is a world away from fox hunting and other such "sports".
To those who say that we shouldn't enjoy killing - as a predator we are genetically hard-wired to do so.0 -
Actually OP, going right back to your first point, you do need to help your daughter cope with this. When my kids were young we did a lot of "I disagree with X, but some people like it / think it's correct / feel that they have to...." do whatever X was.
I do hope that you can use this thread to talk to your daughter about others' point of view. One of the most helpful things we can give our kids is the ability to debate properly without denigrating others. I don't know if you can also plan outings / get her involved in other activities on the days when you know she'll be upset.0 -
And the ability to debate properly without getting upset when others are not convinced / don't seem to listen. AND the ability to think through the issues properly, rather than believing things because their parents believe them / teacher told them so / it's the way it's always been.Actually OP, going right back to your first point, you do need to help your daughter cope with this. Sigh. We still don't seem to have got DS3 to grasp that starting any counter argument with "that's insane!" or "are you insane?" isn't the way to win friends and influence people.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I cannot imagine how anyone could get enjoyment from killing any living creature and am glad I don't know anyone who does.
I am a vegetarian and do not wear leather or have leather handbags.
I do not kill any creature. I am terrified of spiders but my husband puts any that come into the house into the shed or garage. We collect up the snails in our garden and take them to the local woods.
Oh and I don't agree with greyhound racing either (or horse racing)The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0
