I used to live in a block of flats in London and it was the noisiest place on Earth, neighbours knocking on the walls, banging things on the ceilings shouting and swearing. It got so bad I had to find somewhere else to practice on my bagpipes.

I often muse as to why the UK is blighted by non detached houses.
Why should we all live in rows ?

Go anywhere else in the world and there is a greater incidence of detached houses.

I dont think its really about space either.

There is a world of difference between a detached house and one which isnt physically connected.

One could easily have a rown of houses which were not physically connected but which didnt really have sufficient space between them to warrant the full "detached" moniker.

Instead the housing industry continues to built sh&te for us to live in and charge premium prices whilst charging excessive amounts for what they call a detached house.

i mean, what are we talking about? An extra gable end and a couple of feet of space to try and ensure the occupants have some quality of life?

I have to say my neighbour on one side is brilliant but i despise the one on the other side.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The Netherlands seems to have just as high a proportion of non detached houses TBH.

last house was a town house built in 2004. We heard doors banging, people going up and down the stairs, low frequency bass from all night music in the adjacent bedroom. Then parents would go away and we would hear parties until 4 in the morning. This was all on one side and on the other we had 3 flats with quieter occupants. We sold 2 years ago and now live in a silent detached with orchard on 3 sides, no dogs, no hot tubs, no barbeques and the nearest neighbour is only accessed from the front and over a communal courtyard. It is bliss, oh and the last house was a problematic leasehold as well so I think we made all our mistakes in one go

We used to live in a top-floor flat. We never heard a thing from the neighbours below... Except for every Sunday at 10pm on the dot when they'd have, um, their special time. ;)

Glad someone else has said this, our neighbours don't do it so much now for some reason, but you could oftern hear them having a row and then 'making up' :D

The other side is a Man and his Son and dog, the dog barks when someone calls to the door which is usefull. The Son sometimes plays music but only for about 5 minutes and someone coughs alot  no idea which one. I can only hear the coughing if I happen to be in the kitchen as thats directly against their conservatory.

Thanks everyone... We hear a lot from our neighbours (semi), I've lived in semis all my life and never heard as much noise as this even though it's just 'normal living noise' - house built 1960s, looks like it was thrown up rather than built properly :/
  • I hear my upstairs neighbour using toliet which is unpleasant.

I'm in a 1930's end terrace and we hear hardly anything. When the neighbours' dog was younger we could hear it barking but we don't hear it any more.

Have just remembered, in the last semi our lodger slept through DS2's arrival!!! Two midwives, GP, and a lot of clattering up and down stairs.

But I think that was him rather than the house.

we live in a 1890's mid terrace with kitchen attached to one side and courtyard bit between the other side. don't hear much from one side, bit of loud music on occasion and shouting at teens

the other side is rented and I must say the 3 tennants so far have been quieter than the owner when he lived there :D can usually hear front door closing, dog barking or howling (which sets mine off and vice versa) going up or down stairs and shouting or loud laughter

i'm sure they can hear us too and I often say hope we're not too noisy, if we are let us know
