We live in a 1910's semi, actually it's not too bad. The only time we could hear music from their living room was if we were in our bedroom. Used to be able to tell when she was going out or it was a friday night as cue very loud Abba music blasting out of the kitchen into mine (the walls were thinner there as they are later extensions), which I didn't mind as I like Abba. Plus I was already friends with the woman and her daughter, so really didn't mind it.
The next person in there apparently had a huge party in the house until 4am and we didn't even notice.
It's been empty now for the last year, but I notice any noise that comes from there now, more paranoia than anything. And heard when people broke in a couple of months ago. The landlords must have taken the carpets up as everytime someone goes in there to do some work to the house I can hear them clear as day.
Looks as though someone is moving in next week, so will rethink this is a week. If they were the people I heard looking around it they sounded like a herd of elephants, and the proceeded to have a giant arguement in the street.Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.0 -
We live in a 1912 built semi and hear very little from next door . Sometimes a raised voice or their wardrobe doors on the other wall to ours . Reading through this post I think we're really lucky ! It sounds funny reading some of the things people hear but it wouldn't be funny at all listening to some of the noises . DD lives in 60's terrace + hears shouting from next door as if they were in same room . Couples on both sides have noisy special time so DD + her husband have stereo sound sometimes !0

Having lived in a semi-detatched built well over 100 years ago, and now a reasonably new build detached, I can safely say I don't hear the neighbours anywhere as much as I did in that old cold semi-detached that was 'well-built'....yawn.0 -
We live on the top floor of a Victorian maisonette, and hardly ever hear anything from the guy who lives below.
We get on with him really well anyway and have had drinks together etc, and know that if either of us were unhappy about anything we could just knock on each other's door and sort it out easily.
He says he hardly ever hears our 1 year old either, which I am thankful for!Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -
1910 terraced dormer cottage, can hear the neighbours on both sides a little, when they have a party or when the young boy next door runs up the stairs, they can hear our dog playing with his toys while we are out sometimes. But we all get on reasonably well and have never had a problem.
Our old flat was murder, you could always hear someone drilling and someone else having an argument, when we moved out our old flat became a party flat with loud rave music all the time. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Early 2000s private apartment block.
It's a surprisingly thin-walled building and you can hear a lot. Not conversations, as a rule, but noises. The couple next door bang things a lot and judging by the depressingly rhythmic thumping that lasts for exactly three and a half minutes every Saturday night I'd estimate they've been married for a minimum of five years.
Upstairs is having renovations done at the moment and that can be pretty noisy during the day but it's quiet at night. Luckily we're one down from the top floor, so most of what's directly above us is actually the penthouse's outside terrace, meaning we don't get much footstep noise.
The worst thing here though is an increasingly rowdy pub which is outside and just down the street; a combo of concrete walls and wind off the river conspire to drive any noise from outside the pub - and there is a lot, particularly in the summer and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights - right into our window. It's a horrific nuisance and I would never, ever, ever live near a pub EVER again.
It's interesting that despite over 100 years in construction advances, builders of 'joined' houses still can't seem to crack how to properly sound insulate between the two homes. Makes me even more determined to find a detached house when we finally get our deposit saved up to buy."I'm not a one-trick pony. I'm not a ten-trick pony. I'm a whole field of ponies - and they're all literally running towards this job."

We have a very solid 1910 (ish) semi cottage. The rooms that adjoin are the back bedroom, office and stairwell. At the far ends of the houses are the living room, kitchen and utility so main living areas are away from each other.
Saying that, we use the back bedroom as a snug and have the TV on the adjoining wall (to her bedroom) and the office has the hifi speakers (below her bedroom), again against the adjoining wall. Due to a recent shift change I now listen to the radio from about 0515 onwards while getting ready for work.
I don’t hear my elderly neighbour at all. I think we are the noisy ones! I regularity ask but she says the only thing she hears is when the cats go a bit mental play fighting and thunder up and down the stairs (the sound is quite staggeringly loud)
You have made me paranoid and I will have to pop by and ask againPlease note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -
No-one's mentioned the delights of primary school children learning to play the recorder!!!
We moved before we could take our revenge.
That's nothing. I used to play the trumpet.
But our neighbours were a family from hell, so my mum sent me into the garden to practice under the Mum's window.
And a kid where I used to live in the noisiest flats on the planet played violin. Or murdered stray cats for a hobby.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
