  • I'm just trying to sort out my home and contents insurance and it's a nightmare. I've got a ridiculously high renewal notice so it's about time I shopped around I think. Flippin' insurance companies assume that you'll just accept their renewal price without question.

I had to have a go at the AA recently cos they sent me my breakdown cover renewal and it had gone up even though I hadn't claimed. I checked online as though I was a new customer, and the premium was far lower, so I called and got them to refund the 'overcharge'. The same thing happened with my car insurance.

With my home insurance, I'm searching all the price comparisons websites and it's so confusing! I have no idea what to put as a voluntary excess, or what the rebuild value of the property is, not sure what the contents value is - and so it goes on. I don't want to be overinsured but obviously dont want to go for a cheap price and find it hardly covers anything.

Regarding the AA, I got a renewal recently and did the same as last summer. I rang them and told them I was thinking of leaving as it was too expensive. They offeffered me a much lower price and I said it was still a bit pricey and asked if that was the best they could do. Finally got it down to just under £6 a month for breakdown and relay. Have since added Their breakdown repair insurance and got that half price. Will let it run a month or 2 and then call again. Make sure you haggle and don't accept first or even 2nd offer.

Same applies to home and car insurance. I always opt for no voluntary excess because I know I will struggle to pay anything above the compulsary excess. Once I have found the cheapest quote for the cover I need then I haggle again. Have always done this and it's so satisfying. When I wrote a list of everything in each room and totalled it I was amazed how it all added up, so its worth doing.

Good luck hth, let us know how you get on.:)

So that every single post that I contribute to this thread is on topic I would just like to say I am an elite 11+ member and I hear the unjust silence of my opinions whilst I am shopping in supermarkets mainly. Just sayin.

    WOW!!!!

I fancy a slice of that with a brew!!!!

    Respect!

By the way, I just used a tip from the scrimpers programme and it works like a charm!!

I used a tiny bit of white spirit on a corner of a clean rag and wiped my kitchen windows and lightly buffed with another clean clothe. I have NEVER managed to get such amazing results so effortlessly.

Gonna do the windscreen of the car next.

We have just a had a lentil leftover soup for lunch.
The rest of the stock n veggies from yesterday's casserole was put into the thermal cooker with a mug full of lentils and blended together. Nice and wholesome with whole wheat toast and my own butter, mmm!

    hello everyone :D

    Hi JJ

    Nope auto-save hasn't kicked in grrrrr :(:(

If HMRC would only accept Tesco trawling as a self employed profession I'd be sorted, I must do more than 24 hours a week doing that. I'd even happily pay tax on my profits, (after expenses of course ;))

Correct me if I'm wrong and I'm not suggesting that you tell porkies...

As far as I am aware, you do not need to provide actual evidence of the number of hours you work. As you are genuinely only a few hours a week short, would you reach the target if you included the time spent doing preparation and paperwork?

If you are self-employed then I would consider any time spent doing anything work-related should count so with a mystery shopping trip for example I would count the time spent reading the job spec, travelling to the job, doing the job, travelling back from the job and submitting the report as being time worked.

Keeping a record of all your jobs, income and expenses is also time consuming - can you count a couple of hours a week as hours worked if you need that time to keep your books up to date?
If you're not scared, you're not paying attention

    afternoon all

Not a very exciting day so far today, had to follow misery gust to the garage to get his bike mot done, got passed by a gritter which does not make good for 2 wheelers, and even less so when you then go past a burst water main! Twas -3 as well. So dangerous for anyone on 2 wheels

Got a 10% discount card from matalan in the post this week so would have been rude not to take advantage- got a new pair of trousers for work, a pair of boots, socks and leg warmers for £20. The boots are soooo lovely too :-)

Getting ready for the rugby, prepping rugby tea of takeaway secret big macs and a few vodkas :-)

Sending hugs around for anyone who wants and get well wishes for anyone who is in need of them as well

    Keep warm and safe everyone

    1) Plug into wall
    2) Switch on at wall
    3) Add liquid of chosen type
    4) Switch on the front to low/med/high as appropriate
    5) everything else in
    6) Lid on
    7) leave well alone.

Everytime you take the lid off, you add another 20 mins cooking time

    HTH :-)

This is what insurers hope will happen, my sister said she didnt want to change as they were very good and she never had any bother with them. She also never claimed so of course she didnt have any bother with them, and as for being good???
Have a look at TCB or Quidco.
I change all my insurances every year and get loads of cash back.
Love your Mum, you'll never get another one when she's gone.
