Right, I've changed back and it's OK. There's a few MSE people online ATM, maybe they're tweaking something.Bulletproof0

that was worrying for a bit  thank goodness it's back to stretchy (normal imho) now0

Stretchy = good.
Your version = not even close to mediocre - a retrograde step
Your version = a 'gas operated' 800x600 return to the BBS / middle 80's & 12" green monitors. Sorry M8 it might suit the tiny tablet and miniature i-tech brigade, and of course your site [STRIKE]accountants / marketeers[/STRIKE] revenue needs, but its sad / bad / and a mean, not thought through cruelty to anyone of any age colour or creed wearing spex.
Your approach to this masthead is reminiscent of Phorm / NTL et al .. .. [STRIKE]hide the[/STRIKE] opt-out rather than opt in !

Remove the side bar on the right and it would be ok
Looks a bit ridculous on my 1080p screen at the moment but I could get used to it if we get the 10% space on the right.
There is no need for all those extra areas while browsing the forum.Save save save!!0 -

Harsh, but true I'm afraid. Having given it as long as I could stand before finding this thread and changing it back to "stretchy", I'm afraid to say you probably need to look for a web designer who doesn't think that everyone is using monitors from the mid-90's and IE5/Netscape.
Seriously, a 1000px width fix in 2012?!?
Anyway, I've made the change, it looks LOADS better in "stretchy" mode, so I've got no complaints as the option is given.
But, Martin, you're not usually known for letting bad ideas through, but really.... anyway, point made!0 -

I have a 29 inch monitor and fixed width looked tiny on it. I took a look but reverted back to the old forum skin which I have used ever since the newer one come out as the newer one doesnt have the new post icon/no new post icons on the forum list.
However, I have spotted a glitch. On the old skin, there is some fixed width code that is making the board wider than the brower. It doesnt matter if firefox is maximised or reduced in size there is a fixed overlap which is causing the the bottom slider to appear. My guess is that it is linked to the header or footer rather than the forum code itself as it was fine before those changes.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Hi all! I have just signed in to revert to stretchy - on my widescreen asus mse looked terrible!
aside from the gaps either side in either mode there's a horrendous amount of white space at the bottom of the page. bring that master border up a bit :rotfl:
i do a great deal of reading of the forums and site generally but without signing in - only sign in if i need to post. i'm concerned that the squished up fixed width will put people off who just come here to read, learn and/or gain information! can the fixed width be widened just a bit?
technology has moved on on so much that the only screens this forum will look anyway near ok on with this fixed width are very much the older types imho. like my son's 15" xp lappy.
much love

Thought I'd gone back 10 years in time until I logged in and changed the options. The new look is terrible, imo.
Why no option for changing without being logged in/registered? Could an option not be added to the top of the page for guests?0 -
Hard to understand the (slight) over-reaction by some people - there's been clear instructions on how to change how the site looks. Also there's a lot of websites that use this fixed width format - even BBC News and YouTube have a fixed width.
So this is not a unique change - in fact this site looks even better now when viewed though an iPad. There's a lot of tidying up to do (the bottom of the webpage has a lot of wasted white space) but these are things that can be fixed without most people even noticing.
So lighten up a little people! We're have to get the best value from our hard earned dosh - not to be website critics!0
