I dont know if it is connected but I have noticed that threads and even the boards on the forum are taking longer to load since the masthead change and I am getting a jump where it shows the top of the page first before going down to the post that I clicked on.

Sorry Martin but I am another one who hates the fixed width (and my monitor is an old 'square' style so the side gap isn't quite as big as the picture on here.

It took me ages to read the first page, I was getting a headache by page 2 so tried reverting to 'stretchy, less bright'. It didn't change the margins, so I tried the 'old' option which was horrible.
Luckily when I tried 'stretchy, less bright' it actually changed this time.

    Not impressed.:(

I completely hate this `new` look...I have poor eyesight & I can`t always log on so I lurk but its simply TOO SMALL TEXT!

The new fixed width means that the screen is impossible to read unless I log in & faff about in user CP. I do feel that this is discriminating against people like me....even on a 21inch widescreen!!

Thanks MSE for this step backwards & alienating folks like me who now will not be able to use the site. I didn`t feel my poor eyesight was a disability but I now know just how that feels.

Clearly you have not listened to the majority of feedback anyway so I`m not sure why I even bothered posting this.:(

On the masthead design....personally couldn`t care less although it looks very boring now.

As above post, I just logged out and my screen immediately converted to the 'fixed width'.
I HATE IT EVEN MORE NOW - like 'SSA' above, I have to wear glasses and only usually 'log in' when I post on a thread.
To have to do this EVERY time I visit MSE will unfortunately mean me not coming here as much.
It would have been much better to have the 'stretchy' option as the default.

I used to love MSE, now I only like MSE.

Hmmm. I'm in the 'prefer stretchy less bright' camp but freaked out when I moved pages and the page went really wide. So now I am back on fixed width but used ctrl and the mouse scroll to make the fixed width fit the width of my monitor. But mine is something like a 22" monitor and not widescreen.

Haven't tried it on my phone yet, but would really appreciate a 'next page' button for navigating forums on the iPhone. The number of times I desperately try to get to the next page and skip one by accident....

the only probable solution is to create an illusory effect - for instance the outlines and the bakground to be darkened so that our focus is just the forum; at the moment it is all blending into one with empty space around specially when your screen is wider
  • Fixed width forum = Bloody lame and stupid! Some of us have much larger monitors then the 15" things your obviously using. Try using the site on a 28" screen and your see it looks crap. I've changed my settings back now but if I was a new user, I'd take a look and probably never return. Its just simply poor web design.
  • MMonkeySaving? no offence but I've reported your post to get the screen shot deleted as its really not helping the discussion on this thread.

I'm an 'oldie' and have to wear strong glasses at the computer (and varifocals for non computer use) – and I love the new layout. Maybe those complaining about small font need to learn how to increase the font size for viewing on their machine? On a Mac the user simply presses 'cmd' with '+' as many times as required to increase as needed. Once is enough for most web pages. 'cmd' with '0' returns the font to the size determined by the site designer. On a PC it's 'ctrl' with '+' or '0'. On this laptop the old webpage used to 'slither about' and I also have an over-sensitive 'glass' touchpad which didn't help. It's now stable. I use a MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard) with Safari, the Mac browser, and have probably the smallest text of any normal computer because of the high resolution non-reflective screen until I enlarge it. We Mac users are used to small windows, I hated them when I first transferred to a Mac from a 22" PC but I soon got used to them. Anyone who hates the white margins only has to narrow the viewing 'window' to the size of the wide middle column, which is far, far bigger than the now popular Kindle or similar readers. Once the window is narrower the user can see the lovely desktop they spent so long personalising. Mind is a restful blue, the colour of a summer sky.
  • What on earth has happened to the site's layout:mad:
