When I 'go advanced' on a reply the options/selections are all over the place - most of the buttons are written in text not the usual symbol, the smilies are so far to the right on the new narrow page that they are mergin into the green latest mse news and cannot be selected. not sure if this is just me or common to everyone. Using Windows 7 and firefox. Firefox 6 I think. PS could the white be less white - very glare-y

Another issue - if I go to edit a post it loses the formatting, so any line spacing, even new lines started squish up into a block of text. Windows 7, Firefox 6. Example of this in my post above on this thread #42. was easier to read now all squished.

When I try to see who has thanked a post (clicking on the usual show me button), the page simply jumps to the top of the page, and the thanked bit does not expand. Windows 7, firefox 6.

All the above problems are now resolved.
Not sure if its down to something that has been fixed at MSE. Or because I've cleared history/cache etc. Or because I'm now on firefox 9.

    But its fixed.:)

And I'm going to try the fixed width less bright option for a few days.

I like it, but feel there's too much of a light colour down the
sides of the site, very hard on the eyes, when you are looking
and reading the page, as most forum users will be doing.

Totally agree far too much white, not good for migraine sufferers or people with eye problems, is there any way of changing it?

I've gone stretchy like many people and it's much better. Giving the option to move away from fixed width is good, and hopefully future changes to the design will make fixed width more readable, at the moment it's just too difficult. I'd compare, and in some ways contrast, with the changes made to the BBC News website last year (you can see the relevant blog entry and over 2000 comments here). The majority of comments were against the changes but the BBC stuck to their new design and now I (at least) am very used to it, although it also has a large amount of white on the left which is totally wasted space. They did not give an option to return to the old layout, but to be fair the new one was not as hard on the eyes as the new MSE is.

Ohh it looks ok now on Opera! The masthead and all the icons display properly. :T

As for the stretchy v shrinky thingy, speaking for myself I don't really mind.

I'm running Firefox on an Acer Aspire netbook ... and the new layout looks absolutely fine for me :D No white space on the left, minimal white space on the right; yes I've got a horizontal scrollbar but I don't need it as I don't want to read any of the boxes down the right.

Guess I'm the lucky one :D

    I've resized your pic

That is what I now see.

What is the point of my 24 inch widescreen monitor when this forum only uses 9 inches in the middle, and yes I have measured it.

Now that, thankfully, there is an option to change back the width of the Forums to allow people to make use of their full screen width, please can I ask for a similar option for Martin's Blog, which appears also to have suffered today's design improvement?

And how ironic that the most recent blog post is about “MoneySavingExpert: a stronger brand than iTunes”, in which Martin muses that "it does put me in two minds about our recent masthead change. My cherished garish green has gone and been replaced by a much classier and more professional-looking masthead. But will the fact it no longer feels so homespun and personal impact people’s perception?"

The Forum Users seem to be rather more concerned about what I wickedly call the new "half-screen-width" format than about niceties of folded arms, chest hair, and colours of shirt in the masthead!

Do I detect another example of "The Law of Unintended Consequences"?
