OP, this sort of thing is typical of what happens when you try to deal with things like this at a distance. Ask anyone who has ever had to buy or rent a place in a town miles away from where they currently live.
The best advice is to get a room in a shared house / lodgings, put your personal possessions into storage if necessary, and then start looking around for somewhere more permanent when you get there.
If you really must play their games, at least shop around and get a cheap rail ticket for the journey.
I hope your employer is understanding about you taking all this time off work!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

I live in Glasgow and here is what that kind of cash can get you, rental wise.

(not really decorated to my taste, but lovely property, all the same - and the rent includes a gardener!)

3 sets of train tickets wasted!
Hope you are buying refundable/changeable ones now.
How much has this flat cost you so far? If you add that to your budget, you can get somewhere MUCH better

The first pair of tickets were only refundable for the outbound journey, the total cost of the tickets was £256 and I had £160 refunded, so I lost £96 on those. The second pair were £369 and I couldn't get those refunded because I had used them, I was only informed that they had cancelled after I had boarded the train. The third pair for today were fully refundable, wasn't making the same mistake a third time ;-)
So I've lost £465 and about 5 hours of my time so far. Well, if you consider the time I spent adjusting my schedule to make the time for train journeys I've lost about 10 hours, maybe more.0
