That happened to me - but mine was 250 mile round trip. The worst thing was after finally seeing the place, paying my fees etc I get a phonecall 10 days before I was supposed to move in saying the current tenants had retracted their notice! Left me in the doodoo. Still has. I start new job Monday and I have no where to live. Will be going to my mums for a while - I decided to buy a flat instead and hopefully that will complete soon.

PS I have dogs so B&B, hotels etc were not an option

The 6 months will cost me over £10,000 I don't want to spend that kind of money without being sure, there are also nice places (but not as nice as I believe this one to be) that I'll take if it isn't as nice in person.

Wow - that's a lot of rent outside of London (It's a fair bit inside it)!! It must be quite some pad!! Do let us know how you get on!!

I've always found the option of renting a room in a private house an excellent way of staying in a new town/city and getting to know the place whilst looking for a permanent place to live.

I've stayed as a 'lodger' for a short period of three days and another time for a month. It's cost-effective and you live in a cosy house with all the mod cons and you get to meet some really nice people.

Just to add in my two penneth, having been shown around apartments by various letting agents and allowed to wander into rooms unsupervised, containing current tenants' (often expensive) belongings, I too am very reluctant to allow anything to be done when I'm not present.

I can just imagine their reaction if something were to go missing, and equally your insurer's reaction if you tried to claim and told them that the person who had stolen your stuff had been let in by a letting agent with a key!
  • The cake has been taken. Nobody can top this, nobody.

So on top of everything that happened yesterday I re-booked my tickets, woke up early and just as I leave for my train I get a phone call. I get told someone else has already offered on the flat but it's below the asking price (listed at 1800) and I'm willing to go as high as 2000 if I need to, the letting agent said great she'll get back in touch with the land lord and then let me know, I asked if the viewing is still on and she said yes, so I leave for my train. I board my train (it's nice in first class... I went a bit wild) and then 10 minutes later she calls me again. They've accepted the other offer of a lower amount than I'm willing to pay!

So now I'm sitting in first class for no reason, won't be home for another 3 hours and I can't get these train tickets refunded.

Who knew travelling 200 miles each way for 1 viewing that has already been a headache would end in disaster? Apparently not me.

Oh dear. Stop drinking the free first class booze :D, & make appointments now, whilst on the train, to see other properties.

At least you can use the time whilst visiting the new city to look at other places. Good luck

Ooops. This is something you'll dine out on in years to come and laugh. Agree with sooz, get on the phone and arrange other appts. Must be others to see. Or visit agents, etc.

Good luck. Keep us informed :D

Dont waste the day, go round all the letting agents in the area and get a better feel of the area you'll be living in.

That was a crazy amount of rent.

£2000 a month for a flat and first class travel both ways.

Not exactly Dr Zhivago is it.

Its far from unusual for viewings to be cancelled at no notice, for places to be let before you can see them, or just for no one to turn up and let you in.

If youre travelling from far afield you need to book at least half a dozen places you are interested in. Phone to confirm the night before. You'll probably end up seeing 2 or 3 of them.
  • Crikey! I hope you're getting a relocation package from your employer. I know hindsight is always 20/20 but one viewing from 200 miles away was a risk from the start. In any case, firm plans can turn out to be much less firm unless the property is actually vacant That landlord was being optimistic in the extreme.

Good luck with finding an alternative.
