Did you pick your dog

  • We went to Dogs trust to get a female German Shepard puppy.....came away with a 3yr old male little white dog ( think about a slightly bigger, hairer westie)..He definitely picked us, even to the extent of telling off his kennel mate when they wanted attention from us through the glass lol

I chose her and named her Fly (I can type the rest of this without crying i know i can ....) I had her for eleven years and she was my best friend and companion. We competed obedience, agility, flyball and trials very successfully. I miss her so much, even after nearly 7 years. .. I can't believe its been that long ..... And if i had one wish it would be to have her back again.

Awwwww ((((hugs))))) - tears are flowing as I know just how you feel although my loss is much more recent (10 weeks today).

Most of our pups were the last ones out the litter and have all been wonderful. The one we did pick was a real handful so we learnt our lesson there :rotfl:

Ben .... well, he just arrived. I wasn't looking for a dog at all! My next door neighbour asked if I'd consider taking him and I said I couldn't. Then she said he was a chocolate (my favs) and I was tempted but still not sure because of work etc - then discovered he'd been left all day since a pup. Anyway, the owner arrived on the Sunday and that was it .....:)

A timely topic as I'm going to see a dog tomorrow - part of me is really excited and the other part terrified. How on earth will I know if he's right for me? What if I make the wrong decision?

    Truely terrifying.....

I went into my local pet shop for hay for the rabbits. Saw a gorgeous pup, fell instantly in love, bought her and brought her home. Total impulse buy (my bad) but she is without doubt the (animal) love of my life. In a strange quirk of coincidence we adopted her brother from a local rescue a year later. We knew he was the one for us straight away - even though he was a sorry looking thing!

I work in rescue so most of my dogs have been obtained as 'an occupational hazard'! The majority of them have been oldies who I just could not bear to see in a kennel when I had room on the sofa.

My first ever dog was a 6 week old pup found under a bonfire on November 5th, she then caught parvo and I took her home to nurse. It was touch-and-go for about a week but I knew she was on the mend when she snatched a piece of fish finger off my fork! She never went back into kennels :)

Another dog I took on as I was so angry at the people who bought her back to rescue within a hour of collecting her - they said she was vicious! She was a 12 year old, one-eyed, mostly deaf, lame staffie :rotfl:We knew she didn't like other dogs but I stuck a muzzle on her and put her in the garden with my other 7 dogs, and my mates 8 dogs...... she thought better of starting any trouble and by tea-time the muzzle came off and we lived happily for 2 years until her old legs finaly gave up (she had been run over in her youth and broken her pelvis and 2 front legs).

A couple of dogs have been 'gifted' to me by friends in resuce, once they know you've got a soft spot for a certain breed they just call when one arrives .... so thats how I've had 3 Great Danes and 3 blue/grey lurchers.

My lastest dog: our eyes met across a database! I was checking computer records at a rescue centre and noticed a litter of whippet cross pups had been born. A quick phone call later and 1 of them had been reserved for me. She arrived home a year to the day after my last little lurcher had been put to sleep.

Good luck finding your new dog OP x
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

My boy picked me and he's the best thing to ever happen to me. My best mate's wife went to the shop for a loaf of bread and came home with a puppy. Some kids had been stood on a street corner selling puppies for a tenner each and she only had a fiver and a bit of change. The kids took her to their house to ask the owner if a fiver was OK and she said "Anything to get the little barstools out of the house!" So, puppy got to her house, stinking, covered in fleas, hungry and a bit aggressive and my mate's wife decided it wasn't a good idea to keep little puppy near her 2 dobies. While she was ringing everyone she knew to take puppy just for one night my mate came down to my house and asked me to look after puppy for the night.

I wasn't sure because I had a very anti-social cat (it turned out she was dying, poor baby girl!) but my mate asked me to just go and have a look at him. I did, and the second I walked onto his garden this little tiny black blob came running up to me and I fell in love. I took him home promising to take him back the next day when they've found him a home. He was too tiny to climb my stairs so I stayed downstairs with him on the settee. I took him back the following day, went upstairs with my mate and puppy stood at the bottom of the stairs screaming. Every time my mate went down to check on puppy I could hear his wife saying "She's not keeping him, she can barely look after herself!" but there wasn't a cat in hell's chance that this puppy was leaving me. Well, she couldn't find anyone who could give him a home, just people said they'd ask around, so puppy came home with me.

As time went on she realised she couldn't have been more wrong about me not being able to look after him. 6 months after I took him in she came down to my house and she said she couldn't believe he was the same dog. She was stunned that I'd had him neutered, he was well behaved, he was so friendly and you could see the shine on his coat from a mile away. She gave me a great big cuddle for looking after him, said she was really glad that she was wrong.

She also realised that my life improved immensely. I came off anti depressants, I started exercising, my confidence went through the roof and I was just really happy.

My puppy was one of a litter of 6. 3 of the puppies had already been killed. One of his brothers moved into a house opposite to mine and another got a home just around the corner from my mum's house. The owner of one of the puppies knew my boy was his dog's brother because even though they were totally different colours, they both had the same eyes. That person learned not to touch my dog though, I don't know if he could smell his brother on him and didn't like it but he is literally the only person EVER that my boy has growled at.

He's still my baby. He saved my life a year and a half ago. He did a "Lassie" and told people outside that his mummy wasn't well. I had a big seizure and was found on my living room floor laid on my back, unconscious, choking on my own vomit. I don't think I'd be here now if he hadn't gone outside and kicked up a right fuss!!
Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)

We applied to a breed rescue. He was the only one who fitted what we could offer as a home and 'they' contacted us to tell us about him when he needed a new home. We went to see him, he (and his first 'parents' came to visit us), then a week later he moved in.

We are a match made in heaven.

My first dog was a tiny little pup . She was crossed with a terrier and sausage dog. The rspca staff just opened the kennel door and she ran over to me and that was that. Had her fifteen years until she had a stroke. My second was from a litter of sheepdog x !!!!!ion frieze . He was the most gentle dog and not too bright. Lost him in Nov last year also fifteen.
God Im in tears now. Davsidip I said no more but then another dog would be homeless.

    Awww, loving reading these.

Cant wait to see what happens when I go and visit a few shelters (or the first one and end up just seeing the first dog as I dont know if I could actually choose between any)....

Maybe ill just see which dogs would suit us the most, and see if they choose us ;)
I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:
