I just pop them into a bag and chop them frozen. I do the same with fresh ginger and frozen ginger is easy to grate as well
You are a star:T I've lost count of the number of bits of ginger I've thrown out because it became rubbery. Now I can freeze it - do you take the hard skin off before you freeze or leave it on?0 -

He has limited mobility due to illness but his mind is razor sharp. Sadly he lost his wife last year so is home alone a lot of the time now. He was thrilled with the bread and jam which made me feel really quite humble. It does me good to spend some time with others who are less fortunate now and then to remind me never to take things for granted.
FTM - I have both grandma's china sets and wouldn't part with them for anything. Granny C had a 1920's art deco set which is fantastic - she left it to me as she said my mother (her only daughter) wasn't as careful as I was. I'm now terrified to use it in case it gets broken.
Granny M's 2 sets are a bit more flowery but much loved nevertheless. She was a bit more of a practical woman so I have no hang ups about using hers.
How lovely of you to take stuff to your parents old friend - that could be my dad!
I was left a china tea set by my aunt, that had been her grannys (so my great granny). Auntie left it to me as she said I was the only one she could rely on not to sell it. When mum gave it to me after auntie died, I told her that I couldn't promise not to sell because if the kids were starving, then I would. But mum said that was OK. Regrettably it is in a box in the loft as I am terrified of something happening to it. Though I don't really believe in doing that, pretty things should be used.Hobsons_Choice wrote: »Probably just me....I also loved the book and read it at least twice.
The TV play (only first part watched, obviously) I found slow and plodding. Too many meaningful looks and "Harold Pinter pauses" ifykwim. Plus the lead bloke wasn't manly enough for me, a bit insipid.
I shall watch tonight's episode and hope I enjoy it more. Love ..."The midwife" though!
Yep looking forward to both programmes tonight. As for the lead - well, there's not many I would climb over him to get at:rotfl:

I just cut them into finger sized chunks and freeze them in a bag and I peel them when frozen. They are easy. I also used the chunks when making chutney and they worked fine in the muslin bag, saved me travelling 12 miles round trip for ginger
lol, a neighbour said to help myself from his jerusalem artichoke strip on the allotment. I love them but ,,,,,, hehe let`s just say that dd and her dh could have blasted off to mars after she cooked a whole lb in a soup0 -
Please can I camp out with you good people. I'm a 't'y but before Christmas I suffered some sadness myself. I thought I was ok but it's come back to effect me and I'm determined to not let it get to me and need to be positive. I've avoided MSE for a little while as I do find it a depressing place sometimes... thing is I can't really be without my OS fix!
The amount of ginger I have slung because of mould setting in is embarrassing. I will freeze from now on, if nothing else I will have a collection perfect for ginger preserve. yum.
That reminds me, all the talk about seeds, I need to repot my fruit bushes and need compost. Will look at the money situation next week. Some good news actually, we're getting recycling bins as opposed to using th large green recycling bags. That means I don't need to buy large posts for the buses - I can fill the 2 recycling bags with compost instead!
Off to do my shopping list for tomorrow - never shop without me list. Thanks for having me0 -

well no jerusalem artichokes for hubby then, I've already warned him that activia yogurts are likely to be a banned substance in our house if he doesn't moderate his behaviour after eating them:D0 -

welcome along fuddle - happy to have you with us. I'm impressed with your weight loss - I've managed to gain 9lbs since Christmas. A combination of too much good food and drink on holiday and very little exercise. I'm back at the gym classes with a vengeance now and reminding myself that I pay £10 a month for weighwatchers online so I should really use it. It's quite shocking to list your daily food intake - well it is for me. just shows how mant little bits and pieces I munch.:o
I currently have a blueberry and sour cream loaf and a cranberry and cinnamon loaf in the oven. Think I will be donating them to my parents - they have lots of visitors on the farm and it will stop me scoffing them.0 -

ok - here you go. It's actually a hummingbird bakery recipe for raisin and cinnamon loaf but you can substitute pretty much any dried fruit.
7 ounces softened unsalted butter
7 ounces caster sugar
7 ounces plain flour
1tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 1/2 fl ounce soured cream
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
2 1/2 ounces raisins/cranberries/whatever you like
preheat oven to 170 degress
cream together butter and sugar than add eggs one by one beating between. Sieve flour, baking powder and salt together then add to previous mixture in 2 lots. beat until creamy and light. Add soured cream and vanilla essence, mix well. Spoon about 7 ounces of the mix into a bowl and stir in the cinnamon. Stir the dried fruit into the remaining mox. Pour the fruit mix into a 3 1/2 x 7 inch greased loaf tin then spoon the cinnamon mix on top before swirling together.
Bake for 50-60 minutes or until skewer comes out clean.
i use masses more cinnamon than the recipe says as I love it and I change my dried fruit like the weather. So far, so good!0 -

I gave up on myself scottishminnie, I accepted that I was the weight I was as just being me. Fast forward a bit and now I'm working slowing with the OS weightloss people. I cut down my portions and never deny myself anything, just have it in my head that I really want to lose weight and over time it's slowly coming off. It's tactics like making Cadbury's Options at 40 cals instead of dunking biscuits in my tea at break time. (I still do this though, love a dunked milk choc digestive!)
Two little ones are off school today poorly. I do love to see them snuggled up on the sofa with the poorly blanket. A bit snow today too.
Oh cinnamon loaf. Going to dig the breadmaker out today now and stick a sweet loaf in there. I too add so much more cinnamon than the recipes and also use honey instead of sugar in mine. Might try some small bits of apple in their too - not done that before so we'll see how it goes. Oh yum0 -
welcome fuddle. Bah, losing weight, so horribly hard. I remember the best way for me at one time was to tie a string around my waist and use that as a measure. I got rid of my scales 8 years ago, there was no point beating myself up about losing weight. Ok I am definitely cuddly but healthy as they come. I garden, cycle and so on, yes I know that I`ll have to lose weight as I age due to older bones and joints but I don`t dwell on it, it will happen when it happens
I`ve been flippin in nostalgia land this morning, all by accident. I was raised in liverpool to 18 and in liverpool 5 to boot and I knew all the little streets around there. There was some good community spirit then and a street called robson street was a bustling street of shops on both sides and buses up and down. It has all gone, all cleared to houses and the atmosphere is gone too. Then I got looking at the glorious park nearby called stanley park, I never appreciated how big it was and then houses on rightmove. By golly houses are so much cheaper up there and in some good up and coming areas too. Ripe pickings for auctions and doing them up eg lovely looking 7 bed terraced for 45k. Shops with good accomodation for 80-119k.
Oh it made me so appreciate my parent`s struggles in the cockroach infested houses then. How on earth they raised us children to be the good responsible citizens we became. How clean we were and how well dressed in hm clothes. Washing was a real nightmare in winter then, mangled and on lines across the yard. Then in later, stiff as a board and hung to steam on a big wooden clothes airer on pulleys. I`ve got to stop, my long term memory is going into overdrive today0
