Just trying to sort out my menu plan for the week. Am getting a little (well a lot) fed up with all the sniping at meal times and think my family are going to find themselves going very hungry if they don't stop shingling every single time I serve them a meal :(.

I have a cunning plan for you: just go on ruddy strike! Either cheese sandwiches every night for a week or someone else in the house takes over and listens to the whining instead while you go out and do something much more rewarding.

If OH doesn't like meal-plans then just don't tell him what you're going to serving. Keep him on his toes: it could be Marmite on toast and an apple if he's lucky.

I had a cunning plan the other day when I was strolling around the new BM bargains which has opened up in our town. I found myself looking at a tub of stuff trying to work out what it was and it was omelette.
If I get many more complaints, I'm going to go and buy this stuff, some packets of pasta in sauce and other ready meals and they can just have them  I think the complaints should stop after that!
I can't figure out DH's aversion to a menu plan because we eat so much better when I have one, I struggle to think when I've just got out of bed and have to prep tea whilst I'm trying to clean the kitchen and make/eat breakfast. If I have a menu plan, I don't have to think! I plan the meals around what's going on each evening and everything!
We had a nice spanish omelette and salad tonight. We've got carbonnarra tomorrow night. Then roast chicken Friday and chicken korma with the left over chicken on Saturday.

Saturday will be my menu planning day as we're not at MiL's for lunch (woohoo, a Sunday spent at my house, not feeling guilty because she's running round feeding 9 of us!). So I can do the plan in the morning and get the shopping later on if we need anything from town.

more ice cream made, an easy recipe but using raw eggs and pretty well all in to mix. Was lovely and had 4 whites left so quickly made meringues and split my sides laughing at dh trying to make blobs on silicone paper. Absolutely lovely too no comparison with shop bought ones that taste like sand. With strawberries and real custard beaten with some double cream. Heavenly

Been busy on the veggie patch again as I knew the wet was coming in. Have lifted the last of the first earlies and put all the leeks in as they like wet to bed them down. Lettuce also like cool for a day or two so more lettuce sown. AF cardboard shredded and piled under strawberries sitting on the ground and will look today to see if it has helped at all

Still making rhubarb and strawberry compote as it gives the whole lot a delicate strawberry flavour ie makes a few go a long way. Only been able to mush two lots of strawberries for the freezer so far but am hopeful for more as it makes such a nice pud in strawberry jelly. Also using the tot pots for strawberry puree as well as herbs. So useful and just seen them half price so ordered more

Have stopped all tomatoes now, under cover and outdoors. All now are showing 4 trusses and that is enough so have to be vigilant for sneaky shoots. I have 3 in a growbag under a popup that is not high enough, so have stopped them at two trusses as it`s more important to keep as many as possible protected in case blight attacks (july). All plants have fruits and some are prolific with big fruits already. Just tap canes for pollination when I think about it. I use growpots so water in base ring every day now plants are very big. Food every week in the top ring

Also ran round all, bar tomatoes, with phostrogen yesterday as the rain is robbing the soil

Went on bus yesterday to small town near coast and never heard so many eastern european voice. Why choose here? I don`t know there aren`t that many jobs. Anyway poor town so lots of good cheap shops and got some great buys in wilkos, bon marche and others. Trolley was laden yet again, so nice to wheel or I push if I want to avoid people`s ankles. Such a great laugh on the bus as 5 older women got on at next village and they were a hoot a minute. Happy to see them get on the same bus back so got home energised by laughing. Also lovely bus driver, so helpful and nice. Half size bus for country lanes. It`s a different world

Hello ladies..how are you all on this rather damp and muggy day...its awful outside..but iside my house is lovely..its full of flowers lol..my girls and hubby have bought me flowers by the bucket load for our Anniversary today..house smells lovely...

Kaz..am so glad your girlies arm is better..young bones bend and mend as my gran used to say..as for meal planning..well i love B&T plan..they get sandwiches or beans on toast and thats it til they beg you for something else..

Kittie..hello..well you were right again about the weather..my strawberries were just ripening up nicely and a deluge happens and all the flowers got knocked off..my tomato plants look terrorised and my beans are not moving..

MLW..heya..my heather is still lugging her baby belly around lol...she has had a few sleepless nights and is so uncomfortable..only a week to go...unless it goes overdue haha..

SM..well your a busy one..hows your dad doing?..we are supposed to have a party saturday(its my birthday)..cancelled it and will do it inside..

We have been adjusting to our new life..its still strange with hubby at work all day..but me and iris have been baking, painting and in the garden..its nice to be mistress of the kitchen again..and not share it..
Yesterday we got all the bits of scented candles and melted them down and put them in a jar..wow it smells good...
I am just glad that hubby is enjoying his job..apart from rude customers..and because he is a big chap they seem to not argue with him when the girls on the till ring for the manager lmao...
His mates are envious of his lunch box..they go to a local baker for their lunches and costs a small fortune every week..plus they have to spend at least 20 mins of the lunch hour queueing up and then walk back to eat it..so all in they only get about 30 min break..where as hubby just goes and sits down and has his lunch all ready for him..so 1 or 2 of them have joined him in having a lunch box and say its much better and they have time to relax a little and not rush...
Anyway i hope your all ok and not letting the weather get you down...we are definitely getting a polytunnel and soon...
    love to you all

  • FTM HAPPY ANNIVERSARY - Why is it that until I take the lurcher out for his afternoon walk the rain stops and why is it that when we set foot outside it starts again? Why is it that we get soaked to the skin and the minute we get back indoors and drip on the hall floor the perishing sun comes out again? Do I need to appease the weather gods in some way? If so how?
answers please as am becoming desperate!!!!!!! as well as soggy! Seriously though FTM I am glad you are enjoying you and Iris time and that hubby is enjoying his new job and being a trend setter with his yummy lunch box lunches, well done ! The polytunnel is amazing we now have pods on the second lot of peas and they have climbed to the ridge of the tunnel must be 8' tall, the basil is luxuriant,we've never been able to grow it properly before, we are keeping a succession of little gem lettuces going and have one batch ready, another just starting to heart up and planted out some babies yesterday. The rocket is really good, again we have tried it outside before but never had the crop we have inside. If you can possibly do it put up a tunnel it is revoloutionary!!!!! Glad all well with Heather - hope for her sake that she is on time - Stay dry Cheers Lyn xxx.

  • Hello FTM - HAPPY BIRTHDAY - glad you had a lovely day and such super pressies, love the sound of the enamel coffee maker and the candlestick, very chic! And life without cake on your birthday is unthinkable what a nice DH to buy you one, that's what being OS is really about, having the pennies to afford the odd nice yummy thing on special occasions, I hope you enjoyed every single crumb, cos you're worth it!!!! We had lots of heavy rain here too last night and high winds, but I've taken a chance and put washing out as it's been dry for about an hour now and we even have a bit of the yellow stuff too so hopefully it will mainly dry and finish in the utility room later. We had a lovely day on Friday visiting DD2 and her lovely OH, went to her local very posh cookshop and found a traybake tin just the right size, I'd been looking for ages without luck, so that came home with us. It's nice to keep in touch and she's 2 hours away by car so we don't go too often. Hope Fern is completely better now and wondering how Heather is, hope all well there too but I'll bet she's as fed up with it all as can be, I remember it well. Have a lovely day Cheers Lyn xx.

Good evening all - I hope you are all enjoying the last remnants of the weekend before the Monday onsalught. I'm looking out to pink clouds which is the best weather I have seen since last week. We had horrendous flash floods, thunder and lightning here on Friday which co-incided with me popping a victoria sponge in the oven. 7 lots of power on/off's later it was as flat as a flounder and only fit for a trifle base!
The new garden was a swamp and there was so much rain at one point that I could see a spare grow bag floating by the kitchen window.

FTM - :bdaycake: and it's always best washed down with some wine!

Anyway the party went well, my final contribution was:
    1 birthday cake
    1 pavlova
    1 jubilee victoria sponge
    1 chocolate and caramel cheesecake
28 mini empire biscuits to serve with coffee
    prawn marie rose
    eggs mayonnaise
pasta salad and finally my big gamble - my sunshine salad which was a huge success and caused much interest and discussion.

And the room (as it had to be held inside) was beautifully adorned with red, white and blue balloons, banners and flowers. I'm so glad it went well but I'm also so glad to be able to return to normal this week. I'm looking forward to a mundane weekend soon with nothing planned.

Dad's recovery continues however his boredom is mounting and he has taken to walking quite a lot.He has to stick to the roads though so he is limited in what routes he can take. Mum is worried he is doing too much so I made an excuse to go out this afternoon and took him with me. It was only an hour or so in the car but it gave hime something else to look at and I took the long route home so he could see what some of the other farmers were up to.

I'm off now to plan my wardrobe for the coming week and make sure everything is neat, clean and no threads hanging, buttons missing etc. My late grandmother was a stickler for making sure clothing was perfect and it seems to have rubbed off - if only her knitting and darning skills had been passed on as well then I wouldn't be looking at hubby's left sock with a huge hole in the heel:o
