It was so lovely to see sun for a few hours yesterday but I must say I overdid it on the allotment and am aching today, so an `easy` day coming up. Slugs and snails are winning the war and there is evidence of damage all over the place and weeding is very hard as it is impossible to hoe in such sticky soil. I have ordered autumn raspberries as the promise of lots of nice strawberries is not materialising. Lots of fruit, yes but very damaged

Fish box came yesterday and I have never had such a nice fresh fish delivery, the mackerel was gleaming. That company will be in my favourites for definite, we ate mackerel yesterday and I have my eye on oak smoked kippers today. It was definitely worth the money and I have re-used the freezer ice packs as they had no smell and just tear apart. The polystyrene box was about 8" deep and is already planted up with assorted salad seeds and spring onions and basil. It makes a very good veg planter.

I used to get fish from
    http://www.frozenfishdirect.co.uk/?gclid=CJz30vuqyrACFQwjfAodBi0lZA
it is cheaper and is the fish supplied to supermarkets. I never had any complaints at all. The present order is from cornwall

I must start to collect milk cartons from today, to slide over my celery which is growing fast. I am growing loads to dehydrate this year. Lesson learnt this year and I will be germinating seeds every spring but will only plant out if we have a soggy summer in front of us, it is called being prepared. I really have to recommend planting cabbages etc in planters, I am using rolled down bags of allsorts and the cabbages are doing really well. It possibly won`t work so well, or be necessary, in dry summers but we fancy cooked meals this year and some lovely shredded cabbage goes down a treat. Don`t forget to feed outdoor plants as the constant rain is washing goodness away

I re-vamped my freezer this week, a tall upright and now have a complete drawer for fish, one for meat, one for fruit, one for veg and so on. I have put waterproof labels on the drawers as it is all too easy to chuck stuff in anywhere and I can keep a better eye on the contents, so I don`t overbuy. I am liking it so far and admit to having a dedicated ice cream drawer, a small one, at the bottom. I am addicted to ice cream :)
  • Morning, hope you're all OK and haven't been washed away! We put up some permanent netting in the polytunnel yesterday, took out the first lot of peas which were finished and planted some climbing french beans. The tomatoes are thriving in there, and the beetroot are golf ball sized. We have a succession of various salad leaves and lettuces coming along too. We planted out some basil, which I've never been able to get going before and it is luxuriant, so lots of pasta coming up in the near future (Obviously not in the polytunnel, we haven't planted that!). My strawberries have just stopped, they are green and haven't grown at all for a couple of weeks, no sun, and the Roma tomatoes we planted outside are looking decidedly sad and battered about. It's going to be a random harvest this year I think. Cheers Lyn x.

    Hello ladies...how are you all....
MLW..i have survived with iris...i think because its always been 2 parents here i never noticed how demanding she is..now i am alone with her..its very demanding and it mummy every 5 seconds ...but saying that its been fun..we have made a den out of throws in the dining room and had a picnic lunch..done just about every single jigsaw puzzle in the house, played lego and all sorts...bit i am quickly dropped when daddy comes in the door..typical her sisters and brother did the same..we are slowly getting used to the new system in the house and so far its working...its so nice to have hubby home in the evenings..

Kittie..my tall freezer is sorted like that into drawers..meat,fish,fruits,veggies..and bottom drawer is just for cakes lollies and ice creams...my huge chest freezer is for cooked meals and bread, cobs and milk..much better system i think...
Well our garden is looking good...the spuds are starting to flower away..the toms are doing well despite the rain bashing them about..cabbages are coming on nicely,my lettuces are ready to pick..the strawberries are flowering and doing well...my beans are getting bigger..i agree with MLW its going to be a random harvest this year..thankfully my fruit bushes are doing really well...but you can't live on fruit alone.
I am looking forward to sunday..Father's Day..i have some nice bits and bobs for hubby..a posh watch, new watering can and a gardening book...girls have made cards..he is at work all day..so when he comes home he will have a big sunday dinner waiting for him and lots of goodies from all of us...he deserves it..

a solar event started today and the coronal mass ejected is due to strike the earth with a sideways glancing blow on 16th june. Earthquakes and the like as well as upset animals and people because of the ions and jolts

I have been digging up lots of new potatoes as I can see me staying put for a few days, also hispi cabbages looking good and have started eating them. I tied weights to a net cage over blueberries as it was trying to lift off. I admit that I don`t like the present few days, these coronal ejections really unsettle me. Went to sainsburys and have stocked up with ingredients for hm ice cream, I have to have my fix!!

TV is total rubbish during the evenings at the mo and we are using iplayer, am very much enjoying the silk series

FTM try a sniper tool for ebay. You set a limit and it does the bidding. I used to win loads as it sends a bid out in the last few seconds

Mrs LW, I have bad polytunnel envy!!!
  • Hello FTM - gald you are doing fine with just the two of you during the day, no two ways about it Daddys are special with littlies cos they can't wind Mum round thier little finger quite so easily can they? Have just got the washing off the line virtually dry and walked the Houndicus before the rain sets in. How is your pup since he passed out in the fish pond? hope he is OK. Thinking of your little pregnant one, I remember how uncomfortable those last few weeks are, hope she's not too long to go and that all goes well for them both. How is Fern now, is that horrid cough going? Have an evening to myself today as DH has gone up to DD1 who is trying to buy a house and wants his 'cold light of day' opinion of the house we all said 'Oooooh its so pretty' about!!!! so not having to cook this evening, luxury! Have a good one Cheers Lyn x.
  • Hi KITTIE - thanks for the forewarning, if the hound starts behaving wierdly I'll know why ( even more wierdly that his normal wierd that is!). Have you discovered the delights of frozen yoghurt? DD1 got some from Sainsburys and fed me some when I visited for the Jubilee Concert, oh my goodness it is so yummy and I'm an icecreamaholic too. I have to admit that the polytunnel is one of the best things we've been able to do in the garden,we're learning as we go and have to see how things grow as to where we site them next time. The dill grew some, like Topsy and toppled over as it is 5' plus and is masking the lettuces next to it so will have to harvest and freeze it in ice cube trays. All in all though it has given us a crop well in advance of outside grown things, and the insects seem to be staying out so far. Will keep you up to date as the season progresses. Cheers Lyn x.

Hi lyn..tell me about it with girls and their daddy..mind you while he is being cuddled to death i nip for a bath:D
The pup is ok..daft thing..really worried me..he has good days and bad at the moment..but he is always ready to eat and the tots feed him..when i am not looking:cool:
Fern's cough is retreating slowly..the new antibiotics seem to have beat it (touch wood)..she coughs but only when she has been running now so not too bad..

My dd heather is ok..she is very excited about meeting her new baby girl...

My other dd fionna..really wanted her dad to go with her when she and her partner bought their house..unfortunately he was working and couldn't go...but she wishes he did..its a death trap honestly..and so cold..despite our best efforts at heat retention..her partners dad went with instead and told them it was a good buy....only because its 5 doors away from him and he treats his son like a slave:mad:..i don't like him much..can you tell...but i keep my mouth firmly shut..

you enjoy your quiet evening..o i got all washing dry thankfully..have you seen the weather..crikey..its going to be rough here tonight and wet again...

  • Hello FTM -. The report on the house is 95% favourable from Nell and her Dad too. It is a 4 storey Georgian town house, 200 years old and the lady selling has restored it with original Georgian antiques. It's quirky and totally beautiful with a perfect little garden behind it. It has a cellar which is dry lined and super storage and open fires in 2 of the bedrooms with original grates, both with working chimneys. There is a query over some of the wood in the joists and floorboards in the cellar (they are the ceiling joists which is the underfloor of the kitchen). and it has an extension to the lounge which is breeze block but no other outer finish, we shall have a big chat with our friend who is a very reliable builder, and if she's half interested, a full structural survey - expensive but very necessary. She isn't in a huge hurry to buy but is fed up with renting. Will keep you updated. Glad all is well with you and yours, including the pup. My hound is very unsettled cos his dad is away so might not get a lot of sleep tonight, wish me luck Cheers Lyn x.
