Hello Smee again, I wish I could share with you the smell in my kitchen, I've just harvested the biggest bunch of basil I've ever seen and it is going into some Bolognese Sauce later the guinea pig is happily munching on all the bottom leaves and the smell is heavenly. I have also just picked the first of our second planting of peas, they are bending over from the top of the tunnel, must be 8 feet high and covered in pods. I have just pulled some 'cylindra' beet and a couple of little gem lettuces. Best last, I have just cut the first courgette of the season and have 2 more set on the plant and growing on and the 2 rows of carrots we put in last week are both up. Polytunnels are MAGIC!!!!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

The talk is of a very cold winter starting early, from another site not my normal one. Another excellent forecaster so I am taking it seriously and have already told one dd and have my stove fuel in
Oh hell!!
Well, on a positive note after all the big preps that we did last year it will carry us over for the next couple of years at least. It's mainly just washing scarves and coats etc and getting the horses sorted. Had a big delivery of logs on Monday so spent the morning carting those round the back to the store. Coal came this morning but he puts it straight into our bunker so thats full to brim - but we have been having heating on in the evening because it has been so cold so we are not saving anything. Last thing is the LPG fuel up and the boiler service. Got the boots and shoes reheeled and soled today so thats out of the way. Freezer stock up I shall do towards middle of September. Anything else we can pretty much handle.Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

Congratulations FTM on your new granddaughter, love the name, and so glad all is well after such an awful time.
Most of my potatoes are flowering and so far no blight but past few days has been perfect condtions from them so will be checking them a few times a day and if any signs will hack off the greenary and make sure potatoes are covered and leave for the two weeks they recommend and hopefully dig up potatoes - we lost them all to blight past 3 years, this is first year they have actually got as far as flowering, by now usually they are just a dead mass so hoping and hoping as got different types this year but not blight protected - to expensive for me.
Went and had a look and under a couple of the plants potatoes are not to bad a size, perfect for new potatoes not tiny but 2- 3 ins so anyone know if it would be ok to harvest them while flowers are still on them - cannot for life of me remember what types ( have them written down in garden book but can I find it nope, and need to as more vegetable plants to go in, but think it will be greenhouse rather than garden which means I will need to buy more pots as gave away most on freegle this year with starting to grow in ground instead of pots - cue hubby getting rather sarcastic about my good nature - some have white flowers, some pink and some almost lilac beautiful..... some are earlies been in since March and some went in end of April but not in any order.
Been looking on-line and one site says pick when flowers die, ones say pick when greenery dies and another says pick two weeks after they start to flower so I think I will trust what people say here more than so called official gardening sites - I used to always harvest as soon as flowers died in those far off days ......All my books give different advice.....
I felt daft today had a break between showers so felt up to feeding them so there I am with watering can filled with liquid feed - well diluted of course and getting odd looks from passers by, remember am using side garden so until hedges grow world can see me, you could see their thoughts - what is that daft bat doing watering her plants when its not stopped raining for longer than an hour in months...... but with rain being so heavy am trying if up to it to feed them twice a week - I bought the pellets that are supposed to feed them for 6 months and most have been washed away, so after feeding them remembered I had bought another tub of them so sprinkled them again so might save me feeding for a week or so.
So far main vegetable beds in side garden have hardly any slug damage, not sure why. I did find some snails snuggled down under some cabbages but not had eaten them, maybe they have not got the idea yet there is food to be had in side garden, they are used to it all being in back, if so lets hope this continues. Put down the very last blue pellets I had, not many but at least a token amount on each bed......
My fruit is vanishing as fast as its coming out so not sure if slugs or mice - its all in a fruit cage so not the birds but when slugs have taken them in past they usually do not fully remove the fruit, they leave bits, but every strawberry and raspberry has vanished totallyNeed to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

PAH - having consulted the resident gardener at Chez Nous he says yes, you could harvest while they are still in flower, but probably best to leave them as long as possible in the ground unless they show signs of the dreaded blight. If you do decide to harvest as you need the space they will be fine, just little ones. Cheers Lyn x. Hope you had a nice birthday yesterday x.0

congratulations ftm
I'm feeling very defiant over a rough winter. I think that's down to good preparation and planning. I still have a lot to do but I feel a bit like 'bring it on' and I know I shouldn't because i'll be asking for trouble!0
