Child with Behavioural difficulties

Hello
My son has been diagnosed with DAMP syndrome (deficits in Attention, Motor planning and perception) he also has speech and language problems and i wondered if he was eligable to claim DLA. His movement and coordination are very poor, he finds communication with other children very difficult, is not able to feed, cloth or wash himself independantly and becomes very distressed if routine is changed for some reason. My son has been to see numerous speech and language people as well as seeing paediatric people and occupational therapists and this will be ongoing for some time. Any help would be brilliant, thanks.0 -
To me he sounds like a typical 11 year old going on 14!!
Until you have to care for a child with a behaviour disorder(s) you can have no understanding at all how difficult it can be.
I find some of your comments above completely out of order.
I suppose next you'll tell us ADHD/ADD/ODD etc etc do not exist?[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

How old is your son? Does he have care needs above those of a child of the same age?0 -
This so sounds like my son who was seen by CAMHS at 7, 14 and again finally last year when he was 17 and eventually diagnosed with Autism/ Aspergers after things sunk to an all time low with depression and self harm . We had the school exclusions and violence too. We didn't ever get to the top of the list to see the Ed Psych. Hammer on as many doors as you can - it will be so much easier for you if you can get a diagnosis for your son while he is 11 . My son was so relieved that he had a diadnosis and he could explain to people he has difficulites and is not naughty
Keep fighting for a diagnosis - they just have to do an assessment questionnaire for autism - but we had to wait 6 months before they had the resource to do it. Contact your local autismic society or visit the national autistic soicety website. Is he clever? Could still be autism in the form of aspergers syndrome., which is what my son has
DLA doesn't need a diagnosis - its all about showing the care he needs - use any documents you have from CAMHS - exclusion letters etc. Search for DLA on the autism website - they give lots of advice as to how to fill in the form. You proabably don't realised how much you do to try and smooth his path through life
We have just been successful in a DLA claim and got low level mobility , mid level care for many of the symptoms you describe.
It makes a huge difference to my son , knowing he doesn't have to feel guilty about costing more money eg when things get broken.
The people making less helpful comments haven't spent time in your shoes and have no idea how hard it is.
For those who think it is just bad behaviour/ poor parenting - tell me why his twin brother never has these issues. Believe me it is well off the scale of normal teenage issues0
