  • ebay isn;t the same now.... its too commercialized and if any goes wrong they don't want to know unless your willing to pay

Hadn't thought of them being able to get your personal details from cheque. We normally do send postal orders but a purchase the other day the seller wanted postal orders sent blank and uncrosed. This straight away sounded odd but as feedback was brill we sent a cheque only to find that after cheque has left my back account that the seller is now unregistered. have spoken to them and they say item will be sent out. so fingers crossed.

on the same subject... if item shouldn't arrive what help can the bank give us. I know if you pay for items with a credit card you are covered.

Have heard alot of bad things regarding paypal so have kept away from that opition.

Trully paypal is a complete con, not only do they charge you an extra fee (which is a complete cheek as paypal is now owned by ebay and not only have you paid the listing fees you have paid a percentage of the total sale to them already!) but they are not as afe as they claim to be and many many people have lost out as the problem comes down to the fact that if you make a claim against someone and win - paypal will take the money from thier account, but if theres no money in thier account then you get nothing but a feeling of being cheated.

The other downside is that i'm fairly sure that apart from being able to cancel the cheque theres not much the bank will be able to as its a "personal" cheque and nothing to do with business where it could be covered by various trading standards laws etc.

Hopefully in this instance you will be ok and they will post item, if not, use it as a learning curve and look into using paypal - but only go for traders with excellent feedback.
  • the seller said they hoped to be back on ebay in 2 days time and our item posted fri. they mentioned something about ebay wanting some paperwork from them. Have heard that customs & excise have been getting involved with ebay lately - some people must be making more than there are declaring.

we never entertain anyone with negative feedback...even if they just had one. I know it doesn't sound very trusting but thats life...look after No1
  • the thing is when you are trading/buying in a situation where no-one is covered and there are con artists all over the place you cant be very trusting! Its a shame and overall poeple are trustworthy but you just have to be careful.

Fingers crossed for you, it does sound like you will get your item its just one of those dodgy situations that will make you sweat until you get it!

Talking of police - our neighbourhood was hit by a string of burgularies. 2 calls and police said they couldn't get there til the evening (this was 7am). Third call (by a cop), police were here within an hour (we're 40 mins drive from the nearest police station)

  • I had an incident similar to this some years ago. I bought an item off ebay for my son, about £12 if I remember rightly, and kept emailing the guy I bought it off, in the end I told him I would call in the police if I received nothing from him. After about 20 emails I did contact the police (I was amazed when an officer turned up on my doorstep because I did it through the small crime section on the website). The police got copies of all my emails and forwarded them to the force local to the address provided by a very helpful (at the time) ebay. There was one very embarrassed 14 year old boy that day. He had hijacked his dad's account and thought it would be easy to make money selling things that didn't exist on ebay, apparently his mates had told him that if he kept the value low no-one would bother contacting the police. The next contact I got from the police was that they were satisfied that the parents would deal with it very well and were of good character, and were even grateful to me for involving the police, and would I be happy to leave it at that? I agreed. A short while later I got a full refund cheque from the parents, and a very sincere looking letter of apology from the boy (it was young handwriting). The police told me that they were actually pleased that I had taken this action as, chances are, this lad would have tried his hand at bigger things had he got away with this.

The moral of this story, and it is a true story, is that sometimes the only way people are caught is if people report the little stuff (remember the villain they got for tax evasion?), and sometimes, just sometimes, this might be enough to prevent the bigger stuff.

True paypal does indeed suck, but its the "easiest" way untill something else really takes off, I know there are other sites out there but for obvious reasons they're never going to get as much ebay coverage as paypal.. :<
  • I just checked out the link provided by atulperx and it seemed to me to be an advertisement for real merchant account - maybe I am too cynical!

Anyway that seems very specifically American.

Is there a genuine, tried and tested UK / English equivalent that has some credibility with customers - which after all is what we all need!!

Just a quick bit of advice - NEVER USE PERSONAL CHEQUES! To be honest i'm always a bit dubious about traders who only accept personal cheques as this can only be one of two things - either they want to avoid charges from paypal (perfectly understandable) or they want your bank account details and your address. To be on the safe safe side (you really have to be with ebay) if they wont accept paypal, pay that little bit extra and get a postal order, its peace of mind if nothing else.

This is somewhat paranoid - by this reasoning, nobody should use a cheque ever. There are no details on a cheque that can be used to perpetrate a fraud. And if you win an item on eBay then the seller is sent your address details anyway, so they don't need to get a cheque from you for that reason.

In fact, before Paypal came around then cheque, postal order and bank transfer were the only ways to pay really. I have had more trouble from sellers using Paypal than I have had from those wanting cheques or other forms of payment.

Your best protection on eBay is to use good judgement over the users that you deal with - because you can be scammed just as easily (if not more so) via Paypal than via cheque.
