If a cheque is lost in the post, there is no fee payable....
Are you suggesting that the OP should lie to the bank.

    Good idea. :D

Well phoned the seller in Sheffield and he hung up as soon as he heard who I was. Tried phoning again several times but he just kept on hanging up. Feeling a bit cross I left a message for him saying I would be in touch with Sheffield CID concerning the matter. Now I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't have done that, he's got my phone number. Oh dear won't sleep tonight for feeling worried.

    Marje

Don't worry about the little !!!!!!. He may have your number but what can he do with that? Even if he had your address he wouldn't do anything.

He is a con man and unfortunately he has got what he wanted. He will avoid you, not pursue you.

Sorry you may have lost £10 and i know the seller shouldnt get away with it , but for £10 do you think its worth wasting Police time for a tenner , I wouldnt be impressed if everyone started to waste police time over things like losing £10 when there time could be used in a more constructive manner.

I'd hate to live in a society where a cost/benefit analysis has to be carried out before deciding whether it is worth reporting a crime. Afterall, if you were to take into account the police costs, the court costs, the possible prison costs, etc. there would be very few crimes that would ever be considered worth pursuing.

As for it just being £10, what are the chances that this was a one off thing? This guy has already started getting other negative feedback, so the chances are there are quite a few others affected by this crime. It also stands to reason that if he gets away with it once, he will do it again, and again, and again (and may have already done so before).

I would have thought that before seeing 30 officers in the same train station, just do spotchecks on people - and its not a busy train station, I only saw 7 working, the rest standing around chatting and drinking tea!

Just a quick bit of advice - NEVER USE PERSONAL CHEQUES! To be honest i'm always a bit dubious about traders who only accept personal cheques as this can only be one of two things - either they want to avoid charges from paypal (perfectly understandable) or they want your bank account details and your address. To be on the safe safe side (you really have to be with ebay) if they wont accept paypal, pay that little bit extra and get a postal order, its peace of mind if nothing else.

I would phone straight away and then cancel the cheque if you dont find they are still a member.

Funnily enough nightswimmer this is happening already!

A group of men from somewhere'or'other who were waiting for deportation wrecked a couple of cars... The police said it was worth taking to court of grounds of cost.

It was on the news too... Truly sad times!

I have seen this too - I had a letter from a debt company saying that i had a catalog account in 1999 and owe £127!! I certainly did not but after dealing with capquest i had to call the police who are not interested in looking into it as it would cost too much "money and resources"! So now all i can do is refer the debt company to the police.

I also was slapped and spat on by my high on coke and redbull junkie ex neighbour while i was 4 months pregnant - She also tried to kick my door in (surely assult and criminal damage are involved here!) yet when i called the police they came out 7 hours after i had called and were only prepared to 2have a word with them"!!!

WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO???

Hadn't thought of them being able to get your personal details from cheque. We normally do send postal orders but a purchase the other day the seller wanted postal orders sent blank and uncrosed. This straight away sounded odd but as feedback was brill we sent a cheque only to find that after cheque has left my back account that the seller is now unregistered. have spoken to them and they say item will be sent out. so fingers crossed.

on the same subject... if item shouldn't arrive what help can the bank give us. I know if you pay for items with a credit card you are covered.

Have heard alot of bad things regarding paypal so have kept away from that opition.
  • I have bought lots from e-bay and some quite expensive items (mobile phone etc) but I am always careful and check the sellers feedback and what the items they have sold are.
Broke my own rules on an item that I bid £22 for (+ £8) pp it really sounded too good to be true. IT WAS! As soon as I had bid the item was withdrawn from auction and now no longer a registered member. The discs arrived but were dvd not cd as I had thought and 1 didn't work at all. E-mailed to ask for money back but he denied ever selling on e-bay (and turned out to be in Sri Lanka!!) The only other things he had sold were computer pics(???) for a penny!
I paid through pay pal and have just put it down to experience. Have changed the card on my paypal account and won't break my own rules again and just written off £30
