Thanks to MBE..today was my first ever trip to Aldi and I got 3 self watering troughs and 3 self watering planters for my mums. She can't water easily and the carers charge for it, so this weekend (if it's not raining) I'll remove 12" mini sand dunes with grass off her bit of path near the front door.
For some strange reason she wants flowers in them not veg! so raided 99pstore and poundland for bulbs and I'll stick some bedding plants in too. Might try sticking some strawberry plants in later in the year, they flower;)
The ones in homebase come with a plastic pipe to the watering hole but at £4 extra (for what equates to a bit of pipe) I'll use some old hose pipe from here.

No water butts either in there, they said all gone by 10am.

Do they often have have garden stuff in?

Glad you're pleased with the planters. :)

It shows what a good deal the butts were for £20. From B&Q, you'd pay well over double. £25 for the butt, £12 for the stand, plus £12 for the diverter kit. Just shows what a rip-off they are.

You just have to keep your eye on the website for the bargains, they change pretty frequently from what I can see. Lidl's worth a look too. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

You need cardboard. Lots and lots of cardboard. Every time you clear an area of weeds, cover it with a couple of layers of cardboard. I think you have to soak it. This deprives the weeds of light, so they either don't grow, or grow so weakly that they are easy to deal with.

You can then plant through the cardboard. Make a hole in it, drop your spud in, or plant your squash through it. ;)

oooh, I like the sound of that! Particularly as I hv an easy, free source of cardboard - DH delivers & installs TVs, washing machines etc!

Will def give it a try.

You're laughing then. The cardboard breaks down as the worms feed off it, so it improves the soil too. ;)

If you look long enough and hard enough you could probably find one that predicts snow. :p

Righto, off to Kent for a weekend of pond plant robbing and flower-taking-to-the-just-turned-93-grandma. :D

I also have certain important deliveries to make. ;)

Lemon, as usual, you're in charge. Try not to let the thread get too leggy while I'm gone please. :p

    Later.
