I've seen capilliary matting in shops but don't know what it is for or how to use it. I stand my pots in gravel and just water the gravel.

It's just like a sponge really.

You put it in a gravel tray (for example), soak it, pour off the excess water and then stand your plants on it.

The plants 'sook up' (technical term :D) the moisture from the mat whenever they need to. When the mat starts to dry off, just wet it again.

I had a random packet of "basil cinnamon" or something like that in a seed order from ebay a while ago. I planted them in little pots and they're growing quite well but don't look much like basil! Sometimes they smell like basil, other times more spicy.

    .

Never tried cinnamon basil but looks interesting: http://www.successwithseed.org/cinnamon-basil-step-by-step

Cinnamon Basil is good for uses other than cooking, too. Some garden pests don’t like the smell of it, so gardeners grow it just to keep bugs out of their gardens.

Wonder what bugs it keeps away...........interfering other halfs maybe? :D
Do let us know if you notice a drop in any pests near it.

Never grown stevia either, I would require several acres to keep me going in tea:o

Think he needs reminding that there were three peppers, some chillies, toms... ;)

It's the week before payday, I'm lucky he's not asked to borrow the money to pay for it!

LJ.........you'll regret it (and so will we, listening to you complain that they are all dead/sad looking etc:p) if you just plonk them out.

I've had a look at the forecast for your area and you will be down to 0c to 2c at some point before Monday night. No frost but too cold.

You will only notice that it's dropped that low buy putting a warm snug tom in the blowaway and finding it dead:eek:
Buy next Thursday/Friday its looking milder a around 5-7c at night.
Still to cold to take them from warm and snug IMHO but you could spend the week hardening them off.

Thats what I'm doing at present, well except today, too cold and wet, couldn't be asked.

Just a thought but next year why not try just germinating them indoors and then putting them out as soon as they are up. They will only grow at the rate that the outside temp will allow and will produce tough good stocky plants.

Aunty Annie has now finished her lecture of wise wisdom (IMHO) and will shut up:o

    A valid contribution.:o

Where are you getting your forecast from? Mine is from the beeb, & they're forecasting minimum temps of 4 or 5 degrees every day now to tuesday :confused smiley:
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Really sick of this weather now. The only gardening I seem to have done lately is cleaning up the mud 8 large paws seem to spread all over my floors. (They always manage to miss the doormats).
OH is whinging that we can't use the dining table as it is covered in plants and the windowsills are full. Daren't put anything out yet cause of wind and rain, never mind the cold.
Have flower buds on toms, they need potting on again, might get it done at the weekend.

ANNIE, for the last 3 years one of my greyhounds snack of choice was Scotch Bonnet seedlings, this year they are on the windowsill in my sewing room which is a dog free zone!

I'm presuming you don't have Morrison's down South for the flower buckets?? I've been in to buy another 8 ~ I did make a point of looking to see if there were any packs with more than that, but I obviously don't have mbe's luck ;)

I've been hunting for Picasso spuds today & I think I've come across every spud but Picasso!! I've got my Charlotte's so I think they'll have to do for this year.

Also bought a pack of Chilli seeds ~ Cayenne, Jalapeno & Habanero so will sow them today or tomorrow ~ I'm running out of available windowsill so will have to do some creative re-arranging.

Is £5 too dear for a raspberry cane?? I thought it was so didn't buy it. It's the only cane I've seen (apart from the one I thought was dead in Aldi :o) so am I too late for this year do you think?? I don't really want to order one online.

Fed up with this weather :(

    One cane! Yes, very overpriced.

Order raspberries online, you'll get a better product and choice. You should just be in time from some places, if you order now.

Thanks for that, Lotus, I thought it was expensive (it was in Wilkinson's).

I've been put off ordering online after reading poor reviews on here. I suppose I could risk it ~ I wouldn't mind Joan J (??) as have read that one is a good raspberry, just need to check I've got the name right!! :o
