They say strawberry plants perform bet in their second year so I must admit I tend to chuck mine when they become large and woody after a few years. Looks nice in the planter they should be fine this year but you have to move some out next year when they are bigger.
It's so cold here I cannot be bothered to do anything but whatch the racing. Did get a kilo of grass seed from Aldi for £3.59 so should hopefully have enough now.
Agree I love this thread too learning so much.Save £12k in 25 No 49

I'm no expert but I think they should be fine if you feed them and water em well during the growing season.Save £12k in 25 No 49

More of an expert than me, I didn't know I had to feed them!!
Just looked at the label & it does say to apply a high potash liquid feed weekly after the first fruits form. I really should start reading instructions more often...'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -
Actually, talking about feeding....
I have:
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Peppers
Peas
Mangetout
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Onions
Spring Onions
Leeks
Spinach
Lettuce
Carrots
Potatoes
Basil
Parsley
Raspberry
Blackberry
Strawberries
Do I need to feed all of them?
How often do I feed them?
Do I need different feeds?
Which should I use? Could someone please suggest an actual brand/name of feed please?
(I'm seriously bad at knowing what's what, when people just say things like 'high potage' or 'nitrogen'.)
Last year's feeding was very hit and miss tbh.Herman - MP for all!0 -

I have: List
That list is very similar to mine to be honest, and I would also really appreciate some answers to those questions, and I would throw in another if possible. I've made up some fermented nettle feed (pongy!!) and wondered if there is anything that it shouldn't go on or is it ok to spray it liberally around (in a diluted state obviously)?
Cheers in advance.Perpetual Lurker!

Gosh!!!
There are a lot of variables to answer that and if i tried properly would be here an hour later (Plus there is beer to be drunk at this time on a Saturday!!!;))
It depends on where you have them - ie container/ground/basket etc
How your soil is in general
Is it compost or soil
Had you already added anything? Manure/Chicken Pellets/BFB etc
Most things will grow in pretty much anything but others will need more - ie salad would grow ok in last years compost. Tomatoes will need a good feed.0 -
Ah, of course.
They are/will be in raised beds. (The beds are 25cms deep x 100cm long x 50cms wide and are self contained - sited on tarmac.)
All beds are filled with good quality branded compost, some have top soil added.
The newest (empty) ones have compost with a handful of fertilizer added but I can't for the life of me remember what one. It smells of poo but you were only supposed to need a small amount compared to normal manure. I think it had an 'x' in the name, I got it in Dobbies...and from that description I seriously expect you know what I'm talking about. :rotfl:
Enjoy your beer. :beer:Herman - MP for all!0 -
Frosts still here! Getting on my wick, as I want to get everything back outside. People are complaining they want windowsills/tables/kitchen counters back...
Regarding feeding, tbh I buy a pot of tomato feed at the start of the year & use that on pretty much everything, weekly, once its flowering. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Do I need to feed all of them?
No, you just need to feed me!! I love absolutely everything on that list, apart from the cucumbers, you can keep them!! :rotfl:
Seriously, that is a heck of a list, I am beyond jealous!!
Can I ask if you made the raised beds yourself?? I'm thinking of having them next year (if this year's efforts at growing my own stuff amounts to anything that is) as I've discovered that I get about 4 or 5 metres of sun in my North facing back garden, instead of the 2 or 3 metres I thought I got :j'A watched potato will never chit'...0
