Just tried again and it says my system denied access to the Hosts file etc. it looks like its analyzing it but won`t fo any further or save.

I think its Norton that came installed on the computer.

    This morning I have had:

    Internet Explorer cannot display webpage
    Internet Explorer not responding
Windows has detected an IP address conflict - another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer - more details on the windows system event log.
Can`t connect to hotmail at the moment
    Page not found

Do you think these can all be connected? is it worth trying to do something with Int Explorer?

I`m not going to try the factory restore today as I have to help my daughter type up schoolwork so need word etc to do this. When you say no need to install the google sofware that is installed with Avast (when would I do this)

I watched an HP video yesterday about system restore that erases and reformatts hard disc drive and deletes all files, it reinstalls operating system, programms and drivers (software not installed at the factory must be reinstalled. Is this the one you mean?
Should I do this via the screen prompts or with the 3 discs I made?

    Thanks

Either of the first two options here.

Did you remove Norton using their Removal Tool before installing Avast?

Avast installer has some Google software bundled with it. You can remove the tick from the options to install it.

    Hi,
Thank you for the link, thats exactly the same one I found yesterday with the video on how to `do it`. Does it make any difference to the end result if you use the button on the screen or the revcovery discs. Just want it to be easy to do!

Norton - I just went onto remove programms I think.

I`ll remember that about Avast and Google.

I`ve made some notes: is this correct...

Once the deed is done and windows 7 is set up do I do the windows updates and install Avast before connecting to internet (or do I have to connect to the internet first..could be a daft question but want to get it right)

Avast, malwarebytes and what else should I install please

I`m assuming I`ll have to install my canon printer again

Hopefully microsoft office 2010 will work from my code (as per earlier posting on this topic)

Do I need spybot / ad aware?
Also got at the moment Nitro Reader 2 and Fixit Reader do I still need these?

Will I have to load Internet Explorer again? I`m sure the system came with 8 and not (9 which I don`t like)

    Any more suggestions.

I`m not going to do this until Thursday, as I`m off work all day and can sort it with no interruptions....(but might need help please if I hit any snags)

Just would like to say a big thank you to TakeThat for all your help, I know you are on holiday.

You have to connect to the Internet to download and install the Microsoft Updates.
I recommend that you stick with Norton, at least until the Trial is complete. Though make sure when you activate the program, that you don't enter any payment details.
If you do decide to remove the program before, during or after the trial, use their Removal Tool and then reboot before installing Avast 6(which you may have downloaded and saved to your PC, but not installed).
Yes, you will have to reinstall everything.

Be extra careful whilst installing the free PDF programs, read each step carefully, as they will try to trick you into installing Toolbars and perhaps to hijack your Search page.

IE8 comes as Standard. IE9 is an update.

Holiday makes me more relaxed...so it's not a problem.

    It's a nice enough day...

    Brilliant, thank you so much.

Photo is wonderful, I`m looking out onto dull grey sky!!

Think I`ll stick with IE8, I found it easier than 9. Will hopefully have a good try to get this all sorted on Thursday..but its a scary thought! as I`m frightened of doing something wrong.

If you've backed up, and got the installation discs, a factory restore should take hardly any time
