System Restore

Good morning, I`m after some advice please.

I have tried to do a System Restore 3 times over the past few days and I keep getting the message:

System Restore did not complete successfully, your computer system files and settings were not changed.
System Restored failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore pointg.
Source %systemroot%/registration
Destination.Complusstaging

My desktop has been freezing, playing up when using Int Explorer, Trip Advisor keeps saying it doesn`t support the browser and starts doing fully things..hotmail freezes, and when I click on my favourites I get a search page with options as it doesn`t recognise the web address.
I have scanned with Avast and Malwarebytes and nothing has come up.

Please does anyone have any ideas, as its really frustrating having to keep shutting it down etc.

Many thanks :)

    Hi Katies Mum

While the Techies had a lie in, try working through this thread

It sounds like your restore file is corrupted, so, you will not be able to do it. Please Back Up any critical data on your PC to CD/DVD/USB stick/hard drive before you start.

    Hi donny-gal

My daughter has just backed up all my docs, pictures etc onto a hard drive.

I`ve had a read at the thread you have posted above and this is unfortunately as clear as mud! (most know on this forum how rubbish I am at this sort of stuff and how I don`t understand even basic stuff) sorry! I do tend to get very nervous about doing things I don`t understand if this makes sense.

This desktop is only about 5 months old so surely it shouldn`t be playing up so soon? Its also got Windows 7 home premium if this info is of any use, its an HP slimline one.

Any ideas what would cause the resore file to become corrupt? Is there anything easy to try first?

    Many thanks

Run a repair install if possible or if you are happy to do so, a full Factory Restore and update.

Full model number? Guessed it was HP. You are not the only one.

    Good morning TakeThis,
Sorry how do you do a repair install and what is it - how does it compare to a full Factory Restore?? OMG this is scary.

What is the Microsoft Fixit and is this any good? read about it in the link above.

Desktop is HP Slimline S5740 GB.

I also installed the Microsoft office/word package from softward4students (it let me do it twice once on this system and once on laptop) if I start restoring things will I loose this (not done by CD but by download) don`t want to have to pay for it again.

    Thank you.

It's evening here. :) Will take a look at the HP manual.

As long as you have the Product Key, you can re-download the Office program. Which product did you purchase? I think that I posted a link to the Office product in an earlier thread.
Not easy to find the manual when the sun has gone down and you are on the beach.... but if you reboot and tap F8 as it is restarting, you might get the option to Repair Your computer. Otherwise the Restore Options should appear if you do the same but this time press F11.

Perhaps you can give these options a try, without actually following through, to see which options are available.
  • Not 100% sure on this, but.....
I think some internet security suites block the system restore function unless their tamper protection is turned off prior to doing the restore.....I can understand the logic of this in some ways.
If so and if you have such a security suite it might be worth investigating this aspect.
If I'm incorrect please someone tell me I'm talking rubbish!

You`ve got me wondering now! sunshine and on the beach.. where are you? Its cold and blowing a gale here... grrrrrr I appreciate your help as always but shouldn`t you be enjoying yourself?

Its Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus and it came with 2 downloads (I have the key) yes you did post links for me to install it last time and I used them again to put it onto the new laptop.

I know I`m being very naiive as always but is there not an other option I could try before taking the computer back to as it was when I got it? does the microsoft fixit work? I had a peek and just gives you lots of options which I`m assuming you click on and it tries different things for you. Or do you think the computer has thrown a wobble and it needs more than this to sort it out.

You mention about trying F8 when rebooting to try and get repair option (is this different to restore?) don`t want to press anything until I`m sure what I`m doing.

Thanks again for the trouble you are going to to try and help me.

Hi ChiefgrassCutter, don`t know if this helps but the system restore was working last week..its just gone barmy over the last couple of days.
  • Ah, OK
So that's eliminated that possibility then.
Sorry, I only know about Dells's and their factory restore total square one/day one function....so I'd better leave those with knowledge of modern HP's to further help.

As long as you have the Office 2010 licence key number code you can re-install on the same computer any number of times.
The MSoft authentication server is quite capable of distinguishing between multiple re-installations on the SAME PC and someone trying to install the same software on multiple different PC using the same licence code. (A standard MS retail office licence allows 1 installation on a desktop PC and an additional 1 installation on a portable type machine owned by the same person).
