My 2 yr old son's front teeth are slightly misaligned, but he's never had a dummy. He's sucked his thumb for comfort since he was tiny - something we've evolved to do - and it's affected his teeth a little bit. Dentist is not at all worried. Has suggested I try and get him to stop by 5 or 6 do as not to affect his adult teeth, but where on earth do you start with that??!!

You put chilli powder under his thumbnail!

I could be wrong as I can't quite understand the whole of the post you quoted but could the poster have meant a number of things when they said 'provide natural comfort?' A hug could be called a natural comfort for instance.

I use a dummy for my Daughter, she was born at 27 weeks gestation and the Consultant recommended she have one almost straight away after birth to help her sucking reflex. When we were discharged he advised that I continue giving her a dummy when she sleeps for a further 6 months. He kept my Daughter alive so I didn't hesitate to take his advice.

I don't have any porblem with other kids having dummies, none of my business and I never notice what other people are doing anyway!

To bump a thread from 6 months up, make references to "artificial t1ts"... it's clear as day what it's alluding to and button-oushing/trolling.

Mmmmm. Didn't OP say dummy tit not artificial tit?

My parents, who are in their 80s and my grandparents who are now deceased, always referred to these bits of equipment as dummy tits with no trace of censure intended or implied. It was just what they were called by a certain generation. I assume that the modern use of dummy is just a shortening of that, in the same way that we talk about fax machines, not tele-facsimile machines as they were first called.

I don't understand either why OP bumped the thread after 6 months but I think you might have overreacted to her post a bit.

ETA the phrase dummy tit might be a Scottish/N Irish thing, as I think OP may be from Scotland and we do have a slightly different vernacular from the English.

Not seeing anything that could be deemed a snarky dig at formula feeding mums go by unchallenged (considering the hell lots have been through to end up where they are) - sorry... it was DEFINITELY a nasty vicious little dig.

I assumed the oP had omitted a / between dummy and t1t and was referring to the fact that either could be used as a quick fix comforter when maybe a cuddle might suffice.

Just goes to show how subjective everything we write on here is!

My baby is 6 months and she couldn't go in a sling due to my spinal problems and couldn't be breastfed past 6 weeks as I was forced to go back on morphine patches...

    Some parents don't have options..

A baby being calm with a dummy is better for them than screaming all the time...
My baby is teething badly the sucking helps her earache...

She'll be on it until she doesn't want it anymore, I don't care what anyone says...
I don't want her stressed, angry and agitated...

Sometimes you have to do what you need to do, just to get through the day. If that means a dummy, then use it. If that means strapping your 4 year old in to a pushchair so that you can actually do the shopping, then do it.

At the moment I'm suffering badly with morning sickness. There are days when if my 18 month old wants his dummy and to watch tv, then he gets it, as it means that I can vomit in peace. It won't do him any harm in the long-run, as I know things will change before too long.

Try a bit of sympathy before judging parents. There is often (but not always) a jolly good reason for things.

My cousin wasn't given a dummy, so sucked her thumb instead. She was still doing it at 16. At least you can take the dummy away!

Thanks Elle :) I was hospitalised with my last pregnancy due to MS, so they've taken it seriously this time and I'm on tablets already. I could only eat potatoes and apple juice last time. This time it's cheesecake and orange juice.

I'll try the mints, as I'm getting heartburn too, and a really horrid taste in my mouth all the time :(
