Do you mind if I join this challenge please? Since we are moving we are going to be trying really hard to bring down the costs of shopping and this looks like a good way to do so and save a bit of money.

I think it's all abit confusing at the moment but I figure what we will do is If an item normally costs £4 and I get it for £2 I will charge £3. It will take longer but I figure my husband wont go for the whole shop idea unless there is incentive for him ie cheaper items.

I have started with £9.50 for 5x 9 packs of Andrex (hopefully they will get delivered) using my amazon credit to fund this. It works out as paying £1.90 per 9 pack. Normally these cost around £4.50 so I will charge £3. The profit to the shop would be £5.50 and my amazon credit outlay will effectively have been changed into cash. Hubby will be happy and the 2nd purse will be too.

Not sure realistically how much we can save doing this. I would love a Kmix mixer which I think is £350 but I don't think this is realistic to begin with. I will aim for £150 to put towards a new sewing machine for now.

Kerri - I run my breadmaker 2 or 3 times a week and I think I'd be lucky to get through one lot before it went out of date..... can't remember precisely how long the life was on the last I bought, but it wasn't a full year.

Call it 130 loaves per year that I make, and I get 3 loaves from 2 sachets - that's 87 sachets I'd use in a year, and one quantity of what you've ordered is 72 sachets.

Oh my, I've cancelled 4 boxes. I don't think I thought about it in terms of it being 6 x 12, just 6 pouches oops. That's what happens when I don't think clearly :)

Allinsons Easy bake Yeast Pouches £1.68 for 12 packs of 6 x 7g
Should be enough for me to practice bread making... shows as temporarily out of stock, but I've had that before with the fairy liquid and all of that turned up ok

hahaha I've ordered 5 lots, and just worked out that that's 5 x 12 x 6 lots of 7g... oops so I have ordered 360 7g pouches, which is the same as 2.52kg of yeast.... for £8.40... 86p for 100g in the shops, so as long as I use it all that's a huggge saving of £43.20

I think that's a good idea :rotfl: most bread recipes need only 1 sachet, some 2 but even with 2 that's making a loaf every other day for a year :p I do absolutely love making bread though. Yeast doesn't agree with me though so I try and steer clear as much as possible :( Must see how I get along with a true sour dough though, as the natural yeasts are in far lower quantities than home-made bread. Soda bread just isn't the same...

Edit: I've just realised how many times I used the word "though" in that paragraph :rotfl: oops

Yes I had to start from scratch with the Sourdough culture after OH threw it out.
Cover your Pizza stone with salt and put it in the bottom of the oven and leave it there while you cook something , this gets it ready for use it. Mine has had its first baking but I will do it again then take it out when cool and brush off the salt and return it to the oven. Seemingly it should stay in the oven all the time even when not in use. and will go black in time.
Once its seasoned you can make Pizzas, pittas and nan, I will be making all of them, pizzas last though until I get one of those big shovels, but I know my family will fall about laughing when I do. My passion for collecting kitchen equipment old and new is a source of amusement for my family. So too are my experiments. I'm a good cook but don't always get it right LOL.

    Sourdough Culture

Kilner Jar or similar, (I'm using a pyrex stackable dish with plastic lid)
This is put in the fridge after 7 days and kept there when not in use, to be woken up and fed the day your going to use it.

75g bread flour & 75 ml of tepid water.
With clean hands mix them together, seemingly this is how they ancient Egyptians made their bread.
Leave it out in the kitchen near the cooker.
Add the same quantity of flour and water every day, same way for 7 days then store in the fridge.

I'm just three days into my new culture, so if anyone wants to start one, I will post the recipe.
You need 300 ml of the culture for each loaf, and you need to keep at least 75 ml in container for next time, then you start feeding it every day for 7 days again and then pop it into the fridge to hibernate until your ready to use it.

I will post the recipes as I do them :)

Thank you Mothership!:j Iam going to start a culture tomorrow, so I would love to see your recipes. I love sourdough bread.

£20 in my second purse now and shopping day tomorrow.

Keep up the good work everyone!

He's totally up for stockpiling, but we need to plough that saving into other areas of the budget. I think when/if I ever get another job we will be able to do the second purse thing but at the moment every penny is needed.

Its amazing though that he is up for stockpiling as when I did it a few years ago he was saying things like "do you think the shops are going to run out or something!" lol But when I showed him that we usually have a curry every week, so thats 4 packs of peshwari naan breads a month. Usually £1.69 each in Tesco but on offer in Asda, 2 packs for a pound. So in one month thats a saving of £4.76 on just the naan breads in one month. Apply that to lots of other grocery items and you've saved a lot of money.

I know what you mean, if you look at my posts, you will see in May 2009 I started my own DMP thanks to this site, after credit cards decided to charge me an apr of 40%. I sorted this and we have struggled along always being a little too short of money. I really didn't think the 2nd purse would work but my food spend last week was half what it was before even with buying 2nd purse stuff. For my home finances my food HAS to come in under £70 otherwise I can't pay my bills.

I understand if you feel you can't join in but stay and post :)

Nae bother, I will post them when your ready to bake. The sourdough culture is quite easy to get established and will live quite happily in the fridge until your ready to use it.
I saw the Fabulous baking brothers on TV recently, their family sourdough culture has been going for over 50 years it can live for longer than that. I used to bake bread all the time, and stopped when I had ME, I just didn't have the strength for kneading. I have a bread maker but find the bread a bit too dense, I like a lighter bread. I've been experimenting with all sorts of bread and methods of baking, sourdough bread has a really distinctive taste and I think thats one of the nicest breads to make at home. My OH loves HM bread.

Thanks for the yeast offer Kerri I snapped up one of those.

I recently had a student from America stay with me who had two Italian grannies one from Northern Italy and one from the South, she showed me how to make homemade pasta OMG! I will never buy sheet lasagna again. One of my daughters gave me a pasta machine a few years ago for xmas and for some reason I thought it would be difficult to make, its not and its also great fun, the taste and texture of the Lasagna was completely different from shop bought and it also cooked really quick. While she was here we often cooked together, we made amazing pizza's too absolutely yummy! I will post those recipes too, if anyones interested

I love reading all your posts to see how your all doing, I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the speed the thread is going at AMAZING! I am DELIGHTED so many of you are giving it a go :D

Good luck and happy shopping xx
