  • Hi DFW321 - yes I have a slow cooker, which I have been using of late, but no room in the freezer at the moment to put any bulk cooking into. Am waiting for a 3rd freezer to be delivered (hopefully next week) which I will use solely for bread and milk. Used to have 3 freezers, but one packed up last October and was trying to see if I could manage on 2, but tbh the bread and milk takes up so much space that really need on just for that. Once it has been delivered, will definitely start batch cooking.

Am really determined to get to grips with this and feel so much better now that there is a plan and all you wonderful peeps for support - so thank you once again:T

    Hi

Thank you for the replies to my query :]

    I have another question - I get what some of the abbreviated SM names are but I'm stuck with;
    MrC [could that be C@stc@]
    MrMS [could that be M&$]
    MrI - no idea!!

I'm going to join this challenge :j:T

So here goes £0/£150 Holiday Fund

I'll start it at the beginning of Feb when "we" get paid

In the meantime I need to stock take some of the stuff we have in - I'm not going to pay back at the full price though as I can't afford to so I'll pay back at whatever the offer price was so if I bought it for 50p when I use it I'll pay the second purse 50p. I need to go through the stock pile and sort out what was bought on offer and what was bought at full price [bulk]

    Thanks for the help

Must get DH on board with this

  • Hi Helen Jelly - it does take sometime to get your head around it, doesn't it? I need to get DH on board too, the only thing is when I explain it he doesn't understand what I am going on about, coz not very good at explaining how it works, just know have 'nearly' got it in my own head. Think I will just tell him if he wants to buy something from SM to let me know first and I will give him the cash, if we haven't got it in our own shop already :D

Hi all can i join in please last year i did the grocery challenge and it helped to get spending down havent done it for a while as not been well i have good days and bad days
I remember Motherships 2nd purse system from there i did something similar but not with purse or cash

It might help those of you get your store up and earning when you get a bogof put the free one in your store
At the end of the week go through your main food cupboard and leave 2 of everything in it anything else move to store

I found i had a cupboard full of things some thimes too many of one thing and not enough or none of the others that we needed thats were MOTHERSHIPS 2ND PURSE system is much better than the one i had because it will allow me to (return an item i have too many of and release funds for the item i need but have no money left to buy with
it also will mean if i need something but dont have enough in grocery budget as long as its in my store i could split the pack as it were and buy a single item now if i did this in the sm if it was possible it would cost so much more

example 4x500ml diet coke in cooltrader is on offer at £1 thats = to 3 bottles free so instead of buying a single bottle from real shop i would buy it from my shop and put say 50p in purse the down side for me is i am not able to put a set amount in 2nd purse so i try to put any silver coins in i have times were i don't go out much so the food shop suffers but i'm working on it slowly
have read all the pages up to today

A marker pen is handy for putting a price on your stock just like when you were a kid

oh and i can't do spreadsheet on computer but would like to learn

  • Hi Muffin Man and welcome :)

I like this idea, it's simple and easy, as the best ideas always are :)
At the end of the week go through your main food cupboard and leave 2 of everything in it anything else move to store

I've just checked my tins cupboard and have one or two tins of most things, but funnily enough, I don't have any beans :rotfl::rotfl:...will rectify that this week :)

I checked my fridge too and have had to throw away 3/4s of a tin of lentil soup, 1/2 a tin of spaghetti and 1/2 a tin of beans :( This is the kids 'grazing' when they get home from school and before dinner is ready . If I'd noticed/thought about it, I could have used them up for lunches in work during the week. I'll be more mindful of this in the future.

I've been thinking about my existing stock (I haven't officially started yet), and have decided to allow £1 per week during February for washing powder, toilet and kitchen roll from my grocery budget as a contribution to my 2nd purse. I'm not sure if this is reasonable, but think it's doable for the first month.

Im going out to MrS later today-did a shopping list for the weekly shop which came to £45 and DH says is enough fridge/freezer stuff for 2 weeks. Will look for some sleepsuits for DD to bring it to £60 so that I can use the £9 off £60 spend that DH brought home for me yesterday. The clothes will come from some money DH has given me from his bonus to get the children some new clothes.DS2 has lods that I kept from DS1 and were given by friends, but as DS1 is the first to get to his "age group" he hasn't much that fits.DD also lacks because we weren't expecting her-we thought DS2 would be our last so I freecycled his stuff as soon as he grew out of it.:j.Im also going to Lido's for dishwasher tabs, olive oil and some other bits.

Just thought I would let you know I have added another column to my spreadsheet for my stock - title of column is "location" as I have bits here there and everywhere - it will help me locate them

I like that idea, especially when Im away from home but DH needs something.Ive added the spreadsheets from here to my budget tracker created by Eagerlearner and its shared with DH on google docs-so he can check the spreadsheet before "going to town":D
Have put into my shop. But as it's out of grocery budget already, what i will do, when i buy it back i will just put the difference from what I paid and what current prices are into second purse :T otherwise i will be totally broke and raiding the second purse way too soon :rotfl:

I think I might go this route also-slower start but less pressure. I'll pay full price where I can-but Ill also give myself permission to pay only the difference.
When i first joined the GC last year i would take all my money out on payday and put in different envelopes.

I have made my own "purse" of sorts using pencil bags for my most important budget bits:
    • DS1=£30/pcm for school bits-rather like buses, one month they wont be asking for any money at all and then closer to the end of term there is loads being asked for...what doesnt get used is just left in the purse for later.Whatevers left is split between school uniforms and his own savings account.
    • DS2=£60/pcm for nappies and formula-this is effectively his child benefit money so its all taken out and put in the purse,he's on the +1 formula and is slowly weaning off it,and he uses two jumbo boxes of nappies which I usually get on the 2 for £20, so whatever is left is moved to savings.
    • DD=£60/pcm=Same as DS2 but she's breastfeeding (YAY!Finally one of my children co operates:o so £40 of "her money" goes into savings to pay for clothes, parties and gifts.
    • Petrol=£40, whatever isnt used is rolled over and we normally collect enough to pay for petrol to go to Yorkshire every now and then to vist DH's grandad.
    • Groceries=£60 per week.Whats leftover carries over or goes into the sealed pot.
    • I recently bought two new ones for 2nd and 3rd purse.
