Ok I need help..
You know I was on board with this and all excited.. I feel all in a muddle and like ive failed already..
I drew out my 100 for my shop, and 10 for my second purse (but didnt put it in at the time)
Went to Slimming world, paid 4.95 and 1.85 for the monthly mag.. Then a fiver on the way home for our chippy tea. Needed bread and milk and butty stuff and crisps.. 6.00..
Went to veg shop to stock up on fruit and veg, 8.00. I went to H& Bar with the full intention of buying stock for shop.. Bought wash powder, toilet roll, soap, etc and spent about 15 quid.. Couldnt buy stock as what I bought was what I needed to use now and i got in a muddle as was overwhelmed at buying anyway..
When i got home i got a call from my friend reminding me about clothes from the next sale for 25 pounds, her bill has now come so could i pay her..
So already ive spent 65pounds, still havent done a supermarket shop, as in filled the fridge or cupboards, and cooked for the week..
This leaves me with 45 for the above.. nothing in the second purse. Feel rubbish and have burst into tears typing this..
I truly need some sound advice how I can do this shopping lark, ive been married for 24 years and have never ever been able to shop.... Im desperate.. Gonna make a cup of tea and wait for you all!!!!!:(
I also have a small budget for takeaways each month (say £40 for the 5 of us)
The only things i include in my grocery is food, toiletries, nappies & cleaning stuff. Anything else i budget for seperately
When i first joined the GC last year i would take all my money out on payday and put in different envelopes. I would then get my weekly shop and before i went i would meal plan for 7 days. Then write down what i needed to make those meals, leaving out what i already had in the cupboards. I'd include lunch & breakfast & snacks too. I stopped buying rubbish foods straight away as this is why my grocery bill used to be £100 + a week  and i saw it drop to around £60 ...
Whilst you are getting your shop off the ground, just start buying an extra one or two of the items you use regularly. For example if you need deodarant, buy 3. take out one and use it this month. Don't buy it back. put the other two in the shop and start buying from next month/week whenever you have more money.
Sorry i hope that all makes sense? It's really hard trying to get to grips with a budget when you've never done one before. It's taken me a year now and i still get it wrong sometimesdon't give up though! xx

Hi Annie, so sorry you’re feeling rubbish, please don’t you haven’t done anything wrong.
I’ve looked at your spends as if this was my budget, and it would look like this:
Spends:
SW – 4.95
Mag – 1.85
Total – 6.80
Takeaway – 5.00
Groceries (milk, bread, crisps etc) – 6.00
Groceries (veg) – 8.00
Groceries (washing powder etc) – 15.00
Total – 29.00
Clothes – 25.00
For me, that would be SW and takeaway would come from my miscellaneous budget, which would leave me with about £7.00 for the rest of the week.
Clothes from my clothes budget, leaving me with £10 for the rest of the MONTH.
Groceries would come from my shop budget (for you that’s the £100), leaving me/you with £71.00.
And finally, you still have your £10 2nd purse money for bargains.
Obviously I don’t know how you allocate your money over the month, but I have budgets for food, clothes, misc spends, fuel etc etc…
I hope this helps a little bit, and please don’t be upset.
If it's any help, I have a diary where I often bore everyone about my budget!!

Ah sweetie, don't cry.................look try this
1. Make a meal plan for next week, don't forget to look in your freezer for stuff you already have.
2. Make a list of stuff you need to cook those meals
3. Now think or walk round and check, have I got enough toothpaste, loo rolls, shampoo, tea, sugar etc to last till next friday, if not add them to the list
Voila, you have your shopping list
4. Now to buy at the cheapest price, if you have a H*me B@rgains near you, often they sell gravy mix, sugar at a lot cheaper than the supers, even if it's on offer, A!di and L!dl for fruit/veg, have a look at the super internet sites for which is the cheapest (I just type in the search of Mr S's what I am looking for and go down my list one by one)
5. Go to the shops with list. Go home and unpack, job well done, coffee time
6. Have you any money left??
7. If you have, then look again at the supers websites and decided what you are going to spend your left over money on
8. Visit super, go straight to the item/items, do not pass wine isle, cream cake isle at all costs
See how controlled that is, sorry if it sounds a bit simple but I always try to be straight forward in things and it's the way I figured I would do it when I started a few weeks ago, nice and simple baby steps
(I wrote this for myself to get my head round it :rotfl::rotfl:)

Hi
I've been interested in this idea since Mothership first told abaout it but I've a query and it may be that I'm being thick but . . . . .
If you buy something half price for £1 when you use it you put £2 in your purse - is that right??? Or should I put £1 in my purse, if its £2 surely that means I'm paying £3 for the item - if its £1 I put in my purse then I get it!! Sorry if this has already been answered but the thread is long now and I haven't got time at the mo to read it all - will try tonight though :]
Helen
PS I'm not very good with spreadsheets so how do you keep track of the offer price of something - is it notepad time

If you allocate say £10 a month to the second purse then it won't be coming out of your grocery budget. SO if you buy £10 worth of goodies with that £10 and say it is all half price....when you go to buy it because you need it that month -say a bag of pasta. You would put in £2 if that's how much it usually was pre-offer. So yes you would overall pay £3 but it's coming out of different budgets and i think the idea is to think about things differently and you see the profit you get to spend the money that the supermarkets usually get....if you read page one kerri has done a better job at explaining than me :rotfl::o and once you read through it a few times it does suddenly click ....if you're not good with spreadsheets i think you can just use pen & paper?! Although i'm no good with spreadsheets and i have 3MORTGAGE BALANCE when we moved Aug 2024, £120,000. January 1st £118,267.06. Hey all,
I think declaring will be the way forward for me too! I have started off with quite a big stock pile already so that will help. Added my first £10 to the 2nd purse last night ready for this afternoon's shop.
But so far:
No 7 Face Wipes Paid: £0.00 - £4.67 into SP
Monthly Float Paid: £10.00 into SP
So £14.67 in SP at the moment!2nd Purse #036 £46.69/£50.003rd Purse £30.02
