Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

But the onions in particular are appalling (check this thread) - there's no excuse whatever for so many bad onions!
I bought a bag of red onions a couple of weeks ago. Spotted some mildew on a couple when I opened the bag so took them all out, removed outer paper layers of those affected and wiped them all over before returning to the fridge (kept in salad drawer lined with paper towel) and I'm still using them now. Absolutely fine. The bag of brown onions were absolutely fine too. A bag of each usually lasts me a month.0 -
I've just used the last onion from a bag i bought from Aldi at the beginning of August ! They were a bit hit and miss earlier in the year but recently have been fine. I always open the plastic bag and check them when i buy them, plus i store them in a cool dark place.0

This is getting OT now so I'll confine myself to two observations.
That original flawed 'science' was reinforced repeatedly by even worse science right up until recent years - and it is still being championed by some vested interests (which doesn't always mean manufacturers. Look at the reaction of health 'charities' to any findings which contradict their avowed beliefs).
Don't fall into the trap of assuming that what is being published now is necessarily much better than it was. The pressure on academics to publish is stronger than ever, the resources no better and the peer pressure to publish confirmatory work intense.
And with that I am off to eat an Aldi scotch egg for lunch (and I really am), secure in the knowledge that someone who still doesn't understand that correlation doesn't imply causation is certain to have concluded from epidemiological 'studies' that they are a deadly poison!
The best clue is always to look into who is/has been funding certain research, old or new. Nutrition is more confusing than ever with contradicting evidence published each day ( or if for the funding body unpleasant evidence can get ignored and not published !) - use a moderated approach, common sense and enjoy what you decide to eat
Have I mentioned Lidl's new Goats' cheese and pesto tart (fresh bakery)? I decided to ignore my workshop lunchbox, take a walk and indulge :rotfl:, seriously niceFirst they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -
The brioche bread buns lovely and the quarter pounder burgers from freezer. Made lovely burgers with slice of the mild cheddar cheese. I had nut burger, very nice. They were from Aldi. The red cabbage from Aldi is lovely. Not too big either, we only like them raw and they last ages.Death comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job. MORT by Terry Pratchett.0

The white onions are on Aldi Super 6 offer at the moment, so will be on a very quick stock turnover, no doubt.
I bought some last week, all were fine, and a really good size, unlike the tiny Value ones from Tesco. My store never seems to have a problem with poor storage of veg now. Good staff training, I think.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
I'm sure past complaints have filtered through, hence the investment in chiller cabinets and a wider range of produce.0

From Aldi....
Salted caramel popcorn...99p a bag....totally scrumptious :j
Always get their Piccolo teeny tiny vine tomatoes....bags of taste0 -
Must admit, our recent batch of onions has kept better than earlier in the year.
Still annoyed with the bread issue though. Another week, another staleish loaf especially round the crusts. Must be storing them in the chillers as well.
Summer products are now reduced, grabbed Frozen Pulled Pork for 99p from £2.49 and 99p chicken wings. All the lollies are 69p as well. Seem to have more stock now than most of Summer!
Also back instore was Tropical fizzy pop, first time in a couple of months (again funny as it is a Summer only product).
I best stock up on BBQ sauce too since that'll be gone soon for Winter.0 -
I'd better get down there PDQ then as I'm almost out of BBQ sauce (love it in sausage sarnies) and the chicken wings are way cheaper and nicer than the ones from Dominos0
