The frozen maris piper chips from Aldi are great. I didn't like the peanut butter very much. Has anyone tried the frozen vegetable burgers?0

I haven't seen those for years!!Have they come back? They used to be v good:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Just been eating some Aldi mature cheddar. At (I think?) £5 for a 1kg block it's very nice and good value. I bought it to cook with but it was good with an apple.
Oh and I heard on the radio that the price of cocoa has gone up so chocolate prices set to go up too.:( So I'll be stocking up on bars of Moser Roth 70% (and hiding them from DH or he'll eat the lot).;)0 -
Found something (unusually) best avoided - Aldi Soupreme Oxtail soup. Cheap (of course) but not a patch on Heinz. The Soupreme tomato soup is, however, better than Heinz.
All a matter of personal taste, of course.0 -
Still puzzled about this thread, in that there seems to be an assumption that it's unusual to find something particularly good in Aldi or Lidl - there's no such thread for any other supermarket, is there?
I work on the basis of buying anything and everything from Aldi until something disappoints - pretty rare.
After all, it's the same food supplied by all the other supermarkets in most cases, and from the same suppliers. Why would it be any different?
The only difference is the price - around 30% lower.
I agree with you but I DO think this thread is a great idea to help those who maybe have never tried the place but are thinking of going.
It's just nice to actually read that someone or other really liked something before you take the plunge and try it yourself.
We may be all used to Aldi and Lidl but, to someone who isn't, it really can look like the shops are full of cheap knock-offs of brands that often look like something someone has done in their garage.
Though the stuff is all cheap, it's still a leap of faith for someone to buy Aldi's Norpak (for example) instead of buying their usual Lurpak. I actually prefer Norpak slightly but, before trying it, you tend to think "well surely it can't be anywhere near as nice for that price?". I have much higher expectations now but it is odd for a newbie to believe that such cheap food can be as nice as it is, especially as a lot of the stuff looks like cheap copies from the packaging and the names.
Popped back yesterday and got the strawberry "Cornetto" cones. Absolutely scrummy as expected.
Am currently munching on some of the Choceur Milk Chocolate Brazils (99p!) Big shocker - they're delicious!!
Had their Ham & Pineapple pizza last night. Really nice and a massive bargain at 99p.
Bought more bottles of their version of Robertson's Orange & Barley juice - even nicer than Robinson's (tastes more of actual Oranges) and it's half the price!!
Their 8 pork sausages for £1.09 are also yummy (had lovely bangers & mash - phwoar!).
Bought some more sliced pickled beetroot. Tried the "leading brand" one in Sains recently as it was half-price. Both jars were full of rock-hard beetroot, was not impressed. Tried the Waitrose one and it was half juice and not much beetroot. The Aldi one is best by far and about half the price.0 -

Bad aldi buys:
Frozen chips and wedges
Milk
Potatoes
Well, yes, it's all down to personal taste but I'd definitely disagree with this.
I tried Aldi's frozen chips and their French fries recently and thought they were yummy. I used to buy McCains but I now find the potato very dry. I only buy the Aldi ones now and they're about half the price or less.
Never had any problems with the milk and you can't argue with 4 pints for a quid!
I buy all my potatoes from Aldi. Was without the car a few weeks ago and had to go to Tesco as it's near my house (isn't Tesco near EVERYONE's house these days?!) and tried their potatoes (baked) - not a patch on Aldi's and very dry, Aldi's are fluffy and gorgeous. And cheaper than Tesco's, natch.0 -

I agree, the Aldi Oxtail soup is not a patch on Heinz. But I also think the tomato soup wasn't either.
I'm as far as you can get from brand-loyal. It annoys me when people bang on about flippin' Heinz beans (Branston apart - because of it's sauce - all beans taste the same!), Heinz Ketchup (really??) etc. You can get identical for much cheaper.
But - I honestly think there is NO substitute for Heinz soups. I've tried so many others and none of them have been a patch on Heinz. Their tomato soup is legendary. Their Beef & Veg Big Soup is simply heaven. Their new soup pot things (£1.80!!) are rubbish but you can't win 'em all.
So I've tried all the Aldi soups. They're edible but nowhere near delicious and I would pay a bit extra for Heinz.
Can't think of anything else where I wouldn't just get the Aldi version though. Oh, except gravy granules. Their gravy is awful (is it Quixo or something) and I hope they change that one soon, surely nobody actually likes it?0 -

I know its a thread about Aldi/Lidl, but I know people that are buying Sainsburys cream of tomato soup and they are converted. Try one for 59p.0
