We don't have Aldi in our town, but I was in one yesterday when I was out and about and got a few good things. Wish we had one nearer, seems better than lidl.

Here's what I buy and like from each.

    Lidl
Jalapeno Poppers (frozen, christmas snack range)
Irn Bru (always £2 for 2x2l)
    Onion rings
    Chocolate
Cien Ladies shaving gel (prefer this to big brands)
Plain chocolate bars (pack of small ones)
Fruit and veg depending what they have
Rolls from instore bakery (poppy and sesame on top, sunflower(?) on bottom)
Hovis bread (75p compared to £1.15 or something at Tesco!)

    Aldi
    Chocolate Mousse (about 45p for 4 - well impressed, and it's vegetarian :T )
Strawberry cheesecakes (3 mini) - these were ok but not very good strawberry flavour. Could top them with fresh fruit though!

I'm definitely going to Aldi next time I'm near one for a prowl. There was a rumour about one opening locally, hope it's true :)

I had some of the chocolate mousse from Aldi the other week, well worth the money, the chocolate are both nice from either Lidl orAldi.

What is the policy on Lidl and Aldi reduced stuff? Does anybody know?

Is it better to find a bargain in stores other than Lidl and Aldi?

As always cutting back not cutting out.

I have bought reduced Fresh Diced Chicken in Aldi, when they were on offer for £1.99. They were priced at 99p. I bought two and froze one. Excellent quality. They were reduced a day before their use-by, so even better.

The lady (with broken English) in front of me was complaining that hers were not 99p, like mine. I felt for checkout guy trying to explain that one.

As for other stores, Asda is generally considered to be the number 1 reducer by most of my circle of grocery fanatics.

I've bought reduced fresh chicken and sausages from Aldi, they usually have a 30% off sticker on them.

Called into Aldi today on my way home from work at 2.45pm, it was packed ! Lots and lots of lovely Xmas goodies in there though, will have to make another trip soon !

Things are changing fast at Aldi:

"Discount retailer Aldi has launched a super premium wine range which it claims seriously undercuts prices in other specialists.

The range is designed to cater for the growing number of affluent customers choosing to shop at Aldi for wines and spirits.

According to Nielsen figures to the end of April 2012, the number of consumers from the wealthiest social classes shopping at Aldi has rocketed by 18%, with wine sales over £4.99 increasing by 87%.

The range goes live in stores tomorrow, November 22, and includes a 2004 Grand Cru Margaux for just £22.99, a Grand Cru Class! 2004 Margaux for £22.99, a 30 Year Old Tawny Port for £37.99 and a 1973 vintage brandy for £24.99. There will also be a Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2000 at £17.99.

Tony Baines, head of buying at Aldi, said: “It is no secret that our shopper demographic is changing. In Britain we have experienced a fundamental shift in our perception of value in the past five years, and with that shift we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of more affluent shoppers who are choosing Aldi for the quality and value it delivers.

“We’re getting increasingly known for our quality wines and spirits, and our medal chest has grown considerably over the past year with more than 100 award wins since January. We are sure our super premium drinks range will delight our shoppers, as well as making the world of premium wines and spirits more accessible to those who haven’t previously been able to enjoy them.”"

Whilst I do occasionally shop in lidl I am a regular shopper in Aldi and am noticing more and more I have fewer items I need to nip to other stores for. They now have all the baking items I need and I love the new deli range of jarred olives/roasted peppers and sundried toms.

The tinned tuna is only 57p and they now this week had 4 packs of tins for £2.20. Apart from the odd offer at the big stores this is a brill price for tuna. We also rate the beans and beans and sausage-I was told by a staff member these are made by HP.

Terrible fudge with cranberries - please don't buy it, I beg you - so that a great big pile of it is left so I can fill a trolley on Jan 2nd (the day I give up the diet)

    mmm
  • Another trip to Aldi has resulted in me discovering their Tikka Masala (tall thin jar with a plastic pod of spices on top). Really really nice.

If you like these (currently £1.69 in Tesco), you'll find that Lidl do a version which is in every way identical - right down to the last ingredient and the precise calorie count per 100gms.

Around 86p in Lidl. I imagine that Aldi also do one at much the same price.bahlsen-choco-leibniz.jpg
