Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

Why would anyone need to be told that Aldi is popular? Who is disputing its popularity?
What I am pointing to is the curious behaviour of some customers of a supermarket chain who are behaving more like members of a pop star's fan club.
When people start buzzing like angry bees at the slightest criticism, it's a sure sign that rational judgements aren't being made. What is going on here is a little bit more than consumer reaction to a new shop. There's a good thesis to be got out of this one - though whether it belongs to the sociologists, the psychologists or the business studies department remains to be seen.
I think you're deluding yourself on this. Try attacking Waitrose, and I know you'll get an even more vociferous reaction. Waitrose is loved by its customers (I'm one of them) and so, it seems, is Aldi (I shop there too). Is it so odd that shops that are loved by their customers are defended by those same customers?0 -

When those defences are irrational, yes I do think it is odd. Very odd indeed.0 -
Ive said on more than one occasion that I certainly dont buy every single product I purchase from aldi.
Why on earth would that be anything like "fan behaviour". I go to my local aldi because its convenient for me, I dont drive and its within walking distance. Home bargains is next door. I dont have tons of spare cash so I shop in aldi. That doesnt make me a "fan" or an "aldiphile", it makes me someone who needs to make certain choices when shopping price wise.
I dont think there was anything defensive in anything I said in my previous post to you, I just thought it odd that someone who has already been on the thread referring to aldi as looking like a jumble sale would repeat the comments when people are on this thread trying to point people in the direction of products they've either liked or disliked.
Maybe if you had been to every aldi in the land and had photographic evidence that every single store had a layout something like a jumble sale then people might take your comments more seriously.
You are epitomising what I referred to to my reply to Doc N
Someone made the (frankly silly) remark: 'Aldi - what's not to love'?
I gave a response. Cue outrage from people behaving as if a member of their family had been mortally offended.0 -

I don't trust Aldi much - recently bought sesame seed oil that was clearly not sesame seed oil, which has a very distinctive smell and taste. Returned it for a refund but only got an exchange with another product in store as I no longer had the receipt.
Having said that I'd not be able to afford avocado if it weren't for Aldi!0 -
"What's not to love?" is one of my favourite catchphrases too, nobody's ever called it a silly comment before!
I think I first heard the noted writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie using it years ago...!Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -

Bit weird that. I wonder if Aldi took it up with their suppliers? If they were supplied with what was supposed to be sesame seed oil but wasn't I'm sure Head Office would want to know.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Really disappointed with the Lidl onions again
The last two packs of white onions have been dry with some rotten, shame as the rest of the fruit and veg is good, so may try Aldi or back to the market.0 -

Yes, that was the main reason why I took it back, who knows what kind of oil it was and where it came from! Hopefully the store will do something about it.0 -

Aldi's were not good a few weeks ago, but seem to be ok now.
I wonder if weather conditions etc, have meant that sub-standard products have found a market over the last few months?
I switched to mostly using red onions (they are one of Aldi's Super 6 on fruit & veg this week), they seem to have been fine throughout.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again...
