Agree, some dogs do just plan to be arsey, but this behaviour probably stems more from the attitude of the owner. Any spoilt molly coddled mutt is going to be more snappy than one who's had good mixing and social skills - a bit like kids really (oops - there's another can of worms opened).

Give me a big dog anytime, it's much easier to read the expression in their eyes.

And.. it is also much easier to GRAB a bigger dog if needed....the head /collar is at the right height for the hands to grab.

My point was that some people come across as horrible and hostile no matter what you do or say even in different situations and their poor dogs have very little chance to learn to be nice :( My previous dog was snappy as hell when I got her and quite aggressive as that's how she had been taught was acceptable behaviour.

Shoot me down in flames here, but dogs off the lead will tend to sniff and mix at their own pace, when they are on a lead they are very defensive. Very few dogs actually want to rip another dog to bits.

    .

Yep, I can understand exactly where you are coming from. Our regular walk has a lot of exits that can lead onto a very busy road. I've had a couple of instances where my dog has been off the lead, got the scent of something and decided that that's the way he should go - sometimes at full speed - he also loses his sense of hearing too, nothing brings him back.
So on there, I tend to keep him on the lead, just in case.
We do go to a big woodland area in the spring/summer where he gets left off as the road is pretty far away at some points. He loves it, and as you say - "but dogs off the lead will tend to sniff and mix at their own pace" Only thing is that I'm a bit apprehensive about going by myself, without DH. Last time I went alone, there was a man stood in the bushes. Good job my pooch was with me.............

Dontone raises something to which i should confess. My otherwise pretty rabulous dogdog is a kangaroo jumper. Its true it sometimes excites other dogs, but i'm pretty sure that is her plan. She hops on the lead and this is very difficult on a low mobilty day for me. Off the lead she behaves. Dontone, my sight hounds also have a command for leaveing where they are but not having to come back. I find this an invaluable command letting sighthounds off lead, when they run and don't want to turn back my turn away command doesn't weaken the strength of my return to me command.

The other point which sally a alludes to, is that sometimes by holding dogs who don 'twant to play they areunabletoas clearly but harmlessly tellthe other dog to piddle off. Most people know there own dogs, but there Re a huge number of dog owners we meet walking who really do not speak dog. The worrying thing is there are increasing numbers of dogs who also struggle to speak dog, either to say "go away" or to ask dog politely to come and play.

I had an idiot tell me the reason his Jack Russell had tried to bite my dog - was that my dog was muzzled. Thankfully mine was wearing a thick fleecy coat because greyhound skin being as thin as it is - there would have been a nice vets bill if teeth met fur. She's on a lead and a muzzle for a reason - because she still doesn't quite deal well with small dogs, and every time we make some progress on this front - it's set back by morons letting their dogs bother her, snap at her ankles, hump and generally bother the living daylights out of her so badly it's nigh on impossible to make progress and it's management of the situation only. She's been attacked twice by JRTs (the other dog's been attacked once) and just had the living daylights bothered out of her on so many occasions - and I'm fed up with it to be honest... and the idiot owners of these small dogs come out with gems like "well you shouldn't be in a park if your dog has issues... well you should get up at 6am so you don't run into us... your dog provoked us because it has a muzzle on..." (she wears the muzzle as a precaution and rather large "go away" sign - she's got no blooming teeth to do any harm with really but I'd rather she didn't get the chance to try)

Oh and the owners of these small tornadoes wtih teeth - are always the ones who never pick their poo up either.

    Guess what?

It bothered me so much that... went back today - same place same time.

On the way there met a friend with his 2 dogs, older guy with a spaniel and another dog that looks like pug but it is another breed and I always forget what it is... anyway - both the size of the dog from yesterday...

So we are standing together, talking, told him about the incident yesterday and... there SHE comes, same place same time...LOL

My friend knew her and knew the dog but she did not come over to us and had her dog on a lead... wohooo (Zaa was on a lead too, taking sitting in line with my friend's 2 dogs and waiting for her turn for a treat). Then I saw her pulling out her phone while looking at me...making it very obvious she was calling someone....

You know what? Whatever... at least I know exactly who she is now - in case of any problems :)

    Thanks for all the posts...

Oh forgot to say - Zara started barking when she saw THAT dog but as she was on a lead I could not care less. Yesterday she was not even barking at it but perhaps today she remebered yesterday? Do not know...
