I'd go. I don't see a reason for you not to go.

My Uncle had lived in Croatia for years, he had a heart attack in Afghanistan last year while working out there, so I hadn't seen him in 10 years or so.

I went to his funeral, all of our family did, even my eldest 2 children (who were 14 and 13 at the time), who had only met him a couple of times when they were tots.

I think it would depend on what sort of relationship you had with him before he became ill. If he was 'close' to you then I would say go. If the relationship was non-existent or distant - then dont - just send flowers and a card.
zaksmum - when someone dies after a long illness like this - the service is often poorly attended - I always think its a kindness to the family to turn up and show 'them' some support.
    Its up to you though.

I had to edit to say that I didnt see my nan for some years after she was hospitalised with Alzhiemers - unfortunately she took against me for some reason and attacked me - after which the nursing staff advised me to stay away. I didnt see her again until her mind was almost gone and the staff thought she wouldnt recognise me anyway. So there may have been a very good reason for his wife to ask people to stay away - it may have been for their own safety!
Some people do become quite violent unfortunately, and it was very upsetting to me as I adored my nan and really wanted to see her.
