Should I attend funeral?

The funeral of a cousin is Friday. He was 76 and I haven't seen him for 7 years. He had Alzheimers for the last five years so wouldn't have recognised me anyway. Last time I rang his wife and asked if I could visit him she said no, it would confuse and upset him.

So I don't really want to go - I hate funerals - but should I go anyway to pay my respects?

What harm is it going to do to pay your respects? How did you get on with him when he had his full facilties? Will you regret not going?

    That's an entirely personal decision.

I can understand his wife's response about confusing and upsetting him with a visit when he was ill; paying respects at a funeral is another thing though.

If you really would rather not go, cards and flowers are an alternative.

In my opinion, funerals are for the people left behind to grieve, so if there is any relationship between you and his close family, then I would say go.

I think this is a decision only you can really make. Is there any other family members you could go along with?

You are going for yourself to pay your respects and to support the family.

The fact that his illness meant you couldn't visit him in the past shouldn't prevent you paying your respects now.

I prefer them to a wedding.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Yes you should go and celebrate the life he lived.

The support that you will give the family just by being there is priceless.

No-one enjoys funerals but IMHO if you can be there then you should be.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.
