Yes, Mum would be cross if I bought her flowers or something, as that would be defeating the object in her eyes. They visit regularly anyway but I may do Sunday lunch for them as a thank you as she would probably appreciate that. I did say in my first post that I am grateful.

Re the train, he cycles to the station then travels one stop which is basically the other side of the city. We've looked into a pass before but it only saves the cost of 2 journeys but as he travels away for a week at a time and also works from home now and then he would be no better off. Its a bit too far to cycle all the way as there is no shower/locker facility but we know people who do cycle that distance. It might come to that if costs keep increasing.

I agree with inviting your mum round for a nice meal. Food is a way of showing love for many people, so just accept it!

Re: the train fares - I had a sudden thought that perhaps there might be a bus your OH could use instead? Buses are often cheaper than trains over the same distance. They do tend to take longer though, so he may need to leave earlier.

Yes, it would be two buses and he hates waiting in traffic which is why he likes to cycle/train. He leaves the house at 7am so no way will he want to leave earlier lol He did used to get a lift with a colleague and contribute petrol money but the guy retired lol Never mind, we budget for it so its fine.

It's her way of showing you she loves you - you're a bit old for her to blow raspberries on your tummy to make you smile ;)

Your Mum sounds lovely. It wouldn't even dawn on mine to help out like that. Don't get me wrong, we have a very healthy relationship, it just would never occur to her - not a maternal bone in her body!!

It's how families work...although my sister is in her mid twenties now, she is at medical school and will be poor for years yet. My mum cooks meals for her to take home with her, and always loads her up with tins, etc. I know my grandparents do the same. And now that I am 'rich' in my sister's eyes every time she comes to my house she starts looting my cupboards for tins and my freezer for frozen cake!Even though I am much better off than my lovely grandparents, every time I go to their house they try to give me food to take away with me. Usually it's a frozen roll (why? I have bread at home!) or a tin of mandarin segments (that I don't like!) and they sometimes drop in randomly having bought me an aubergine from Lidl, not that I have ever expressed any desire for aubergines. Just be grateful and return the favour some day :)

Today I went to get a piece of beef and a chicken from Sainsbobs for my DD as she too has too much month left till the end of the month. As I eat there at least once sometimes twice a week I take great pleasure in buying her a few odds and ends to help out.I know as a mum how hard it is sometimes to make ends meet and she has five children who eat her out of house and home. She doesn't waste a thing and the boys all eat 'proper food' no junk food in their house as its just too expensive to buy.A 2 kilo chicken will do one day roasted, and the second day made into either a pie or curried. The Sunday joint gets stretched to two days as well with lots of veg etc.I remember being in that position when my children were young, and I sadly didn't have a Mum to help me out.If I see a bargain that I think will put another meal on her table then I will get it and just stick it in the freezer for her. Both her and her OH work long hours to feed and clothe the children and I help out with childcare.Be glad you have a Mum who wants to give you a hand and remember one day you will be a Granny and it will be your turn to help your children .I adore my kids & grandkids and I would go without myself to make sure they had what they needed, thats what families are about helping each other. Its a way of showing how much you care and want to help out
  • I take food parcels to my DD who often has more month than money, my other DD isn't skint but has to cook carp for the foster children, she doesn't like junk food & often can't be bothered to cook herself someting different so I make home made soup for her. I think it's just a 'Mum' thing, I have the urge to feed people.

What a wonderful mum you have. I have lost both my parents now (only 35) but before my Dad passed away 4 years ago he would often send care parcels to us as he knew it was hard with 3 kiddies and debt. At christmas he would always put together a large box full of treats which was always a welcome gift. MY DD hasn't moved out yet but when she does I am guessing I will be doing the same for her.

I think the idea of doing a nice roast is a great idea, or bake her a lovely cake.
