You should have opened a paypal dispute straight away, once the seller has withdrawn the money to their bank account there is naff all they can do to get it back.
Buyer protection is a load of rubbish.
Sorry, I think you are wrong.
If you are protected (and you are not in all cases of course) Paypal will refund regardless of the money being in the account and then send the Debt Collectors after the seller.2 angels in heaven :A0 -

Actually they will refund the buyer and put the sellers account into a minus figure. Paypal will then chase the seller for the money.S.P.C member 1662 - target £3000 -
As above, it hasn't been like that for a long time! Paypal will now put sellers accounts in negative balance if needs be and then send out the debt collectors. You should have opened a paypal dispute straight away, once the seller has withdrawn the money to their bank account there is naff all they can do to get it back.

Buyer protection on Paypal is now actually very strong.0 -
I would ring eBay again, I know it's a hassle, but if they agree the listing was false/fraudulent by removing it, then they need to get your money back ASAP. And not tell you to wait.0

Well thats good, I also notice reading the small print that they allow you to do charge backs against paypal now. I remember trying to do one with Halifax a few years ago and they hold me I couldn't because i didn't actually buy the goods of paypal.0 -
Ebay have closed the case today and said Paypal will review and investigate it now.
I dont know why and what is going to happen next. Anyone ideas?
I think the seller is claiming his account was hacked and that is why ebay closed the listing.
This is what it says:
